While hunting whitetail deer with a handgun, what hunting method do you use?

I guess riding the roads with the heater AND radio on would come under the "'other" category, huh!? I do some walking, some stand sitting, but mostly I hunt from a ground blind. These "GOLDEN YEARS" ain't what I thought they'd be! The wife asks why I need a pillow in the blind when I'm hunting.JEEZ I might wanna take a nap!

Had to check other, since I hunt from an elevated box blind, commonly referred to on the lease as the condominium.

After a few close calls with falling asleep in treestands, I finally said screw it, and now hunt out of groundblinds.  Once in awhile I'll still hunt going to or from the area I'm going to, or if I've been sitting for a few hours I'll still hunt to stretch my legs, but the majority of the time is in groundblinds, or sitting next to a tree or a down fall...depends on the situation.

I actually prefer to take the hunt to the game. But sadly my days of that are pretty much ended. My shortness of breath is so bad I have to stop and huff and puff to catch my breath every few yards these days. Climbing a hill is not even an option. Dragging a deer over 50 yards is again likely a part of my history. Just not do able anymore.

Been going down hill for several years now. I gravitated to mostly hunting from treestands as a result and in areas where I could basically drive to the downed game. Now I tend to fall down a lot also so trees are no longer a safe place for me to be, if they ever were.

So a ground blind real close to my vehicle is about the only option left to me. Beginning to look like my hunting days are numbered in real tiny digits these days. Only got to hunt one day last year before my doctor told me to stay out of the woods until we determined if my heart was the problem. It wasn't and now it looks as if it's my lungs but none of the doctors can tell me what's wrong with them. Nope never smoked.

I might have to go to JHalcott's method.

If I had my druthers, I'd still hunt or use a ground blind for deer with an opensighted 44 mag revolver...maybe because I grew up hunting squirrels with a 22 that way( and still enjoy it). Since this is sometimes not an alternative because of terrain or safety factors, a tree stand is my most used and least favorite but  most successful option... in which case I use a scoped TC single shot. I don't participate in man or dog drives for deer... for several reasons...but  when hunting pigs, I like that method. :? I guess I don't like to scare the deer before killing them!    pg

I have hunted from the same ground blind on private property now for the last 10 years or thearabouts.  I can't walk far enough to still hunt anymore, and need to hunt where I can drive my Quad directly to the downed animal to retrieve it. The blind os on a little ridge along side a large swamp and has been very productive over the years. The blind is a perminate one, there year round so the Deer are used to seeing it, and last year, I shot a spike under 10ft from the side of the blind. Close enough that I couldn't thumb the hammer back on the SA 45 without him hearing it, so I used a Colt New Service in 38-40 double action and just shot it DA.  First Deer in a long time I shot with a smokeless powder load. It broke both frt shoulders and he went down in a pile without even knowing I was there.  Very few shots from this blind are over 50ft, however the opertunity is there for shots out to about 50yds.

Greeenriver(I sure hope my friend don't sell this piece of property any time soon. Hate to have to find a new place to hunt.)

On the private farm I am hunting right now I hunt from summit tree stand then in the last 1/2 hour or so of legeal hunting light I will get down and hunt from the ground close to a field sitting on an old tire beside a tree.
If I am hunting on public land I will stay in the stand until I am ready to leave.

I don’t use any special method because I’m using a handgun. The only thing I may change is where I actually place my stand or sit to try and minimize my shooting distance. Often times though I’ll sit in my rifle stands where I can see a ways when the deer are known to enter the field at a distance and come closer. This allows me to prepare a bit in advance in stead of having one sneak rite up on me.

Take Care,
Scott

:cb2: After seeing the Tree Lounge video, I figured unless the deer climbed up my tree and poked me in the butt with his antlers, sleeping would be ALL I would do in one of those!  :)
