My .243 handi with shoot 1 to 1.5 inches @100 yards all day long. Just don't use the Hornady light mags, they hurt on both ends.

Most people around here are able to get sub-MOA fairly consistently with minor tweaking; my .223 and 17HMR are no exceptions. I don't know what factory loads the .243 likes, I'm sure others with have suggestions. If you get a Handi (or Ultra), you won't regret it. But be warned: Handi-Holic starts with the first purchase, and the only is...wait a minute, there is no cure!

Good luck!  :)

Can't help with the Bass Pro price, but they run about $230. at my local gun shop. They come with a good Weaver style base so all you need are rings and the scope of your choice. Rings will need to be medium or high depending on whose you buy. I use high Leupold Rings, Weaver base from Wal-Mart. About $17. Have them on all my rifles except one. Don't think you will be unhappy with whichever Handi you choose.

I strongly recommend reading the stickies at the top of this forum and doing at least the re-mounting of the scope rail and the bore polishing with flitz.

The Handi has a very plain hardwood stock and the ultra has laminated checkered stocks.

If there are any other differences maybe someone here who has seen/owned both can chime in.

If you want accuracy, buy the Bull barrel Handi. I have a 243 SS Synthetic that has not shot very well for me. My Bull barrel 243 shoots very well. I have 2 Stevens 200's, 7mm-08 and 25-06, both very accurate. They weigh less than the Handi Bull barrels do........so, length versus weight I guess on your choice..........

ok

i think i'm going 7-08 for deer caliber (any manufacturer that seems shoot well/ not shoot well?)
and for varmit/predetors:
.223- white box 45grain

now a question about bull barrels:
Are all of the 24 inch barrels bull barrels??
i looked on walmart. com and it shows that there are 2 versions of the ultra in .223, they are 22 inch and 24 inch

Am i right to assume the 24 inch barrel is a bull barrel?

I am super excited to get a handi, i love the fact I can have ony one stock/ reciever and still hunt anything from squirrle to moose because i can buy different barrels!!!

THANKS

yup you got "the bug" the 7mm-08 i had shot just fine with plain jane remingotn corlokts in 140 grains and it put a hurt on deer at long and short range .

as for your question about the bul barrel the 223 can be had in both a 22 and a 24 inch bull barrel ,i would get the 24,

Final shopping list:

-H&R Ultra in .223 with 24inch bull barrel (243$ walmart/BPS)

-Bushnell bannor 6-24x (115$ Theopticzone) **I will be using this same scope for when I swap to a bigger barrel, so I dont know if it will work***

-Scope cover flip ups (16 or so$ at walmart/bps)

-Bipod (whatever they have at the store where the gun is bought)- 60$
Padded sling (")- 18$

-Gun cleaning kit (this is where i may need help, dont know what to get for the H&R, please let me know if you have any suggetions!)

- Ammunition, different loads/ grains.....and one of them will sure to be win. white box

- hearing protection (no idea what to look for, i will be shooting a bigger and louder gun later on, so dont want to skimp)

total estimated price: around 650$, probably less

Extras: send in reciever and get  a deer barrel - around 130$ including shipping

(7m-08 is only in 22' superlight?!?, .280-26' barrel, .270-22inch, 22inch stainless, or 26', and .308- 22inch)

Hmm a 22' superlight isnt what i expected for the 7mm-08, i was hoping they had it in bull barrel, maybe I should go with the bull-barreled .270
Based on a recoil chart listed on Chuckhawks.com it seems the .270 has a good amout of kick to it compared to the 7mm08

The bottom line- I just want something that doesnt make the armwant to fall off after shooting at the range and will  take down a deer with an accurately placed, SINGLE shot at around 300 yds (lots of feilds around here)

How can you tell if they are bull barrels?....some say that they are bull barrels, others dont list if they are, How do you know

lt me know what you think/ if any of this is confusing, sorry for the elaborate post

Thanks for the help

On the hearing protection, some folks just use ear plugs.  I recommend getting a set of the headphone type with small microphones and volumn controls.  This gives you the opportunity to wear them when talking to folks at the range, and still have protection.  Also you can wear them when in the field hunting.  You can still hear normal sounds, but will be protected against excessive noise.  My neighbor was hunting with me two years ago.  He had his hearing protection around his neck so he could talk with the kids.  As the boat rounded a bend there was a bull moose on the bank.  Without thinking about it he shot at the moose.  The kids and I had our hearing protection on.  Russ now has to wear hearing aids, just from that one shot.  Russ had a muzzlebrake on his .338 Ultra Mag, the noise was just too much.
