Well, activity is a bit slow so I thought I would post this. I believe that the Rossi is an excellent gun for the money. Yes, I know the H&R is out there and I do own two H&R shotguns and one H&R 22 hornet.
Where Rossi seems to shine is that, in my experience and what I have seen at the range, The Rossi is more trouble free out of the box. There seems to have been alot of the Rossi "matched pairs" sold in my area in .223/20ga and in 243/20ga. I have the 243 combo myself. I have not seen any of these weapons suffer the stuck case problem that seems to plague the H&r. I also like the lighter weight and slim barrel of the rossi.
I am in no way saying the rossi is superior---just an observation.
I will still continue to buy the H&R as they offer more options in calibre.(45-70 sometime in the future). But for a light weight walking gun, I will stay with the Rossi. 1 1/2" is my groups. Nothing to brag about but plenty good for deer.

I have both, Handi's and a 223 Rossi bull barrel, very accurate, good rifle for the money. Prefer the Handi's, but will buy either.

One plus to Rossi, they make rifles in calibers that NEF/H&R does not offer. For example .357mag and 7.62x39mm.
They also do not eject the spent cartridges, which I assume those who reload would appreciate... The NEF's eject the shells.

I would give my money to rossi over H&R any day. at least thier shotguns hit where you aim. rossi all the way.

NEF/H&R still is apealing due to the barrel program and choice of calibres barrel lengths and stocks. I would like to see a head to head comparison of similar guns between them. Such as the heavy barrel Rossi .223 vs the H&R heavy barrel .223. Something along the lines like gun test magazine does---take them out of the box, clean, and fire say 500 rds thru each to check for wear and tear and accuracy.
Problem is i am too poor to do such.

I bought a .308 Rossi break action in `stainless` last year. ( it isnt stainless, its silver coating but anyway ) I probably should have bought a second hand bolt action, this was always going to be a second pick rifle over my Zastava .223 bolt action which is my main rifle for what I am shooting at. I was pretty unimpressed by the Rossi when firing factory ammo, it kicks like prison gin. However, I am stuck with it as resale on these things is pretty dismal, so I started handloading for it recently, and boy what a difference! I am actually getting a group for it now as opposed to a `pattern` and I am starting to warm to this rifle a little bit. Actually I have a sort of perverse interest in it now, I know I can`t realistically sell the thing without giving it away virtually so I feel I can do just about anything I like with it with little recourse. I dont mean I`m gunna take to it with a hack saw but I can put camo tape on it or what ever and not to be `too` concerned, despite being a little particular about my guns` appearence. I am starting to think it will be quite a versatile piece of equipment after all.

A kid was firing a .17 H&R at the range on sunday, and man, when he opened the action SHHHTTING! the empty shell flew about 10 or 12 feet, reminded me of my Winchester single barrel, it`ll hurl an unfired shot shell a good 6 feet

H&R has gone to extractors rather than ejectors on their rifles now. Don't have a Rossi (4 H&R's), but would sure like to try out the heavy barrel .223. Our local Dick's Sporting Goods has some for $300. with a nice looking 50 mm AO scope, but it has no name whatsoever and the guy behind the counter didn't know who made it. They don't sell them without the scope. Will probably break down and buy one eventually

Was shooting my Bull Barrel 223 today 2 bullets in one hole, 3rd made it a.3 group at 50 yards. Using Winchester white box 45 grain varmit rounds.My Rossi is a very accurate rifle!

What I appreciate about the rossi is they don't use one frame size (12 gauge) for all calibers, my stainless .357 mag made on what looks to be their .410 shotgun frame so the whole package weighs around 4 pounds as opposed to the H&R's over 6 pounds. Extractor is nice, and very decent accuracy especially using 38 Special ammo. Stiil waiting for Rossi to get their extra barrel program in full swing.

I agree, these are great little rifles.

I have a 44 mag with a 4 power weaver scope on it. At 50 yards it will consistently shoot 3 shot groups with all the holes touching. This is with factory 240 grain ammo.

I took a nice 7 point with my little Rossi back in 2003, one shot at 65 yards dropped him in his tracks.

I have done a little customizing to mine. I sanded down the stock/forearm to make them fit the action a little better, and to smooth out all the angles. I then stained it a dark green color and put about ten coats of hand rubbed tru-oil on top of that. Installed a Weaver classic 4 power scope with the Tompson Center base.

This is one great little rifle, and I will probably be ordering another stock to cut off for my son. I hope he can take his first deer with this set-up.

got any pics of your .44? Would really like to see what you have done to it. You just don't see enough about these great rifles. I do a better fit on my wood on my rossis as well.

Yes, I will post some pics when I can get back to my guns. I have been on a work assignment in Thailand for the past 2.5 years, but I am going home in 5 weeks.

I agree these are great little rifles, and I paid $115 for mine.

I have a rossi 92 in 44 mag and 357,the actions are as slick as snot,they are both fine shooting rifles.Could not be happier .....nuff said :grin:
