How do you prevent lead shaving in a 30 cal using .310 lead slugs.
Use a 310 or 311 expander ball in yuor resizing die
Use a Lee universal case expanding die
use a lee colect die with a larger mandrel (not an option with me)

Looking for a an easy way, kind of new to the whole cast thing
The universal expander looks like it would work for multiple calibers & use your seat die to straighten the bell & crimp or use a factory crip die

Any sugestions to a newby caster would help

You need to expand the moth of the case just enought to start the bullet with-out shaving lead. I use the Lyman M-dies. I also use the Lee crimp dies to take the slight flare off. You only need to crimp enough to keep the bullet from moving forward or back into the case.

Beveling your case mouths is usually sufficient. If you're getting a lump in the case neck and/or have trouble chambering a round, you may have to get an expander plug for .311 bullets.

Most of the time, a Lee collet die for sizing the necks and properly chamferring the case mouth will work fine. If they still need to be bigger, go with a Lyman M die. For cheap, a 50 BMG bullet and a little hammer will flare case mouths nicely as well, just not expand the necks like the M die will.

I have a Lee universal flaring tool and highly reccomend it.It is easy to use and saves you from buying expander dies for every caliber.Good luck, Jeff Taylor.

Buy the Lee universal. I tried it for the first time last night and it is perfect for 30 cal. I started all my bullets w/gas checks and had no problem with shaving the lead. Now my groups should shrink at the 100yd mark. If I see a good product, I am sure going to say so.

Another vote For The Lee Expander. I use it For .30 and 8mm case expanding. Another method I used before I got the die. Place the case mouth of the case on the nose of an 8mm or .35 cal rifle bullet setting nose up on bench. Strike case base lightly with a 6 or 8 oz hammer to expand the neck.
