The Buffalo Classic has spoiled me
« on: September 28, 2005, 02:36:23 PM »
About a year ago I sent a receiver in and had a 45/70 barrel fitted. When I got it back and took it to the range I found out that not only was it very very accurate but that shooting the 45/70 was more fun than eating dirt.
I couldn't wait to get my hands on a Buffalo Classic and lo and behold in January at a local gun show there it was laying on the table.A little haggling with the seller who was selling it for a friend, some money changed hands and the BC came home.I took it to the range as soon as I could and found out quickly that as much fun as my 45/70 Handi was the BC was even more enjoyable and the aperature sights were fantastic.I spent a couple of months working up a few loads for it and found that I took it to the range almost every time I went.Even when I was intent on another gun for whatever reason,I still found time to shoot the BC.
It suddenly hit me the other day that I hadn't shot the Handi in 45/70 in some months.Today I went to the range and took the Handi and it's other barrel which is 30/30.The 45/70 barrel was accurate as usual but there was just something missing that I couldn't put my finger on.I swapped to the 30/30 barrel for a little change and for some reason that's when it hit me what was amiss. In my mind I was comparing the 45/70 in handling quality and accuracy to the BC.It was kinda like kissing one female while you're thinking of another is the only way I know to compare it.
The BC has totally spoiled me.I have given this much thought all afternoon and come to the conclusion that there is only room for one 45/70 in the gun safe.

While I do like open sites...they aren't my favorite sighting system...and while it may seem logical to sell off your 45-70 Handi...I wouldn't...I would put a good scope on it...and try it with some 300 grain Nosler partitons at 2400fps...that is if you want to see a accurate big bore...You just might change your mind on getting rid of it...

Lonewolf,Yes I did see that post.Good shooting. You also had a question on crimping the reloaded 45/70.I never crimp them and I don't think anyone else does either.Loading the straight walled case is a breeze.

If you sell your short 45-70 barrel, you will find that you miss the short barrel version of your 45-70's.

While one has it's own application for hunting in the woods, for better swing etc, the Buffalo Classic has it's own application out in the field.  There is never enough just one 45-70, and the nice thing is, they don't get jealous of each other, unlike if you have two girlfriends

Having neither now, I wish I still had both again.... I know if I did, my Remington Rolling Block 45-90 wouldn't get jealous one bit.  And now I find myself in want of a good lever action 45-70 for hunting with, and carrying in the saddle for the back country trips.

You can never own too many 45-70's  :cb2:

Thanks Stan!! It was great you thought of me...as I write this I sit at the computer (which now resides in the cellar and is usually covered by plastic sheeting to keep the dust and sawdust off because of the construction) I have a cup of reheated coffee from yesterday, the newspaper to read, and just opened 3 more bills (!!! !!!), a little talk with my wife is in order later today...I may have time to glance at the morning paper with a second cup of coffee and then I am going to work on the dumpster, I want to get it loaded as much as I can and hopefully have it taken away and stop that weekly rental bill. This is the second 40 yard dumpster I have had here and the big stuff is done and gone, if I can get this loaded and out I should be able to take the rest of the trash that may be generated by the finish construction and cabinet and appliance installation to the dump in my pick-up truck. A couple of months should see the end to 98% of this madness.
What I am saying is I simply cannot afford it, but I am sure the lucky person that gets it will be a very happy Handiholic!! Two great classic calibers!!!!....<><....

Picturing this....

MSP,I am sitting here picturing you sitting in the basement under a plastic sheeting "tent" at your computer and the image of mad scientist in the basement makes me laugh.I sincerely hope that you get it all finished without too many more problems.I know it has been a vexation to you.
I felt compelled to make you the offer first. Thanks for the post and the return email.
Montanan made a good point but actually I have a good .35REM lever gun.
It's off to the trader board I go.

Stan, that image makes me laugh also but I do remove the plastic sheeting before I sit down to use the computer. Since you also have a .35 Remington lever gun (Marlin 336 no doubt) it is apparent your excellent taste in firearms extends beyond H&R's. For the record I also have a .35 Remington in a Marlin 336 and love it, it accounted for my largest deer to date (201 pound dressed weight 8 point)...I can only continue to plan for a .35 Remington Handi. Krochus is planning/working on one and I am waiting to hear how it comes out. Hopefully there will finally be a .35 Rem Handi in the future!!!....<><....
