ENCORE .308 Won't group light bullets
« on: September 06, 2005, 01:04:59 PM »
For two days I have been working extensively on trying to get my ENCORE 24" .308 to group with 150 & 165gr bullets without sucsess at 100 yards. I have tried WW-748, H-414, VARGET, & H-335, RP Brass, FED Brass, CCI 200 and FED 210 primers. WON'T do it, CAN'T do it and impossible. This afternoon I loaded some SPEER DEEP SHOCK 180gr with H-414 and BINGO. Instant 3/4" group. Whereas the rest looked like shotgun patterns.
Anyone else experience this frustration out of a .308?

opposite... mine has shot light bullets better... but I haven't tried the variety you have.

I have had similar results, difficulty finding a good grouping load, with my 7-08. Finally found a factory load that groups well and quit looking. I also have a E A B. barrel in 260 with the same problem, but have not found a good load yet. It currently groups around 1 1/2 inches at best with a 3 shot group at 100 yards. Both barrels have been broken in, but have only around 50 rounds through each. Did you do the barrel break-in process?

Now that I have floated the barrel per say I might have to re-try the lighter bullets. It sure helped my 165gr groups a bunch.

I shot some 150 gr Remington Core Lokt today at the range and got 1.5" @100yrds  and 1" @ 50yrds on some 3-round groups.

I do something I call hurry-up shooting too... where once I have the target in my sights I have to take my shot within 5 seconds or so.

I, too had great luck with 15o gr Core Lockts.  One group was under 1 inch at 100 yards from a .308 pistol.  I've never had such good accuracy from this Remington load, and I can wait to try some ballistic tips!  Keep trying different loads, one or more will likely fit.  This is my first Encore, and I love it.  Good luck!
