guys who use ebay for parts and barrels...
« on: September 21, 2005, 12:01:10 PM »
i got an email last week that said it was from ebay and had the logo and everything and said they needed to confirm my account information since i hadnt used my account in a while. i figured they were updating things so i clicked the link and put my info into a screen that looked just like any ordinary ebay sign in sheet.

the next day i had 400 emails in my inbox.

it turns out i was a sucker and signed into some info collecting software and since they had my info they bid on 400 items before anyone could catch them.

i let ebay know about this and they said "we will put your account back on-line" (since they had shut it down due to the activity). well they also said "you have to sort this out yourself...when the sellers contact you let them know what happened and they will then come to us to reconcile everything."

well i have answered dozens of sellers and explained this a hundred times what happened.

a few of the sellers were mad and accused me of just trying to back out of buying items i bid on. i explained everything but they then put a "strike" on me in my ebay profile. so now i cannot use ebay and have a bad rep on there, even though i had 34 out of 35 positive feedbacks before this. the one neutral feedback wasnt even a big deal...just someone unwilling to   play nice.

so now its locked and i cant contact anyone to fix this and ebay has already refused to fix it for me.

i emailed them for the last time tonight and if this crap continues i will be ending my relationship with ebay. i really liked them before but i have had it with a week solid of answering emails that they could have done in minutes, and the lack of help from their end is staggering.

if you guys want to use em go for it but keep in mind theyre a fair weather friend.

and be very wary of emails you get, if it doesnt have ebay's web address in your browser and isnt the same as your usual sign-in place, close that page fast.

I've gotten that same email twice myself. Both times it came to another email addy than the one I actually have listed at Ebay so I knew it was a scam. Sorry you got suckered. You can always just start a new Ebay account and begin collecting feedback all over, sad but that's an option.
I got suckered this way one time when I was still on AOL, wound up giving out my password and man the fiflthy things someone did under my account name were disgusting. BEWARE and always use your head when on-line, others certainly are counting on the fact that you won't.

yeah using my head would have solved this one. i was tired and had just gotten up and saw an email from ebay and thought "you know i havent been there in a while, they probably are checking to see if i still want my account or something" and so i fell for it.

at this point i know i could close my account but it's a matter of principle now, those sellers deserve to know what happened to their sales and i refuse to lose my feedback due to some lowlife who had nothing better to do than screw with me.

Those are called "Spoof" e-mails I think and I have recieved many and have not responded to any but have reported them to E-bay, I guess it's just my suspicious nature developed after 30 years on the "job". I may be the exception but I have bought quite a few things on e-bay and even sold a few and have had great luck, oh well, I hope it continues, sorry about your misfortune, all I can tell you is trust no unsolicited e-mails, phone calls, letters or offers, what a world it's getting to be....<><....     :x

i have used ebay a lot too and i really never have had a single problem. one guy even sent me another product when one was lost in the mail, i assume...no way to know WHERE it went but it wasnt here. so i have had a good run with them and really i didnt even consider the possibility of a spoof because it looked JUST like the ebay sign in and same logo and colors and such...plus it was to the same email i get stuff from ebay sent.

If any legitimate organisation,(ebay, banks etc) want to tell you anything the only thing their email will say is something like:

"Please log in to your account, there is a message there for you."

You then log in via the normal means and retrieve your message.

They don't need you to "click on a link" in the email or for you to send them your details, because, if you think about it, they already know these.

Sorry to hear you got caught out.

Did the weasels happen to bid on any Handi parts??? lol

More E-Bay scam information.............
« Reply #8 on: September 21, 2005, 02:33:00 PM »
Folks,

Beware! There's a second e-mail going around similar to what you've been seeing EXCEPT the e-mail wants to confirm any "chanages" to your financial information. The e-mail goes on to request your checking account number including the pin number you would use if withdrawing money from the local ATM.

DO NOT ANSWER THE E-MAIL!

Save the e-mail and report it to E-Bay immediately.

Well, it didn't work with me! Hee-hee...........I'm a full time cop!

Please be careful. If something doesn't sound quite right; it probably isn't.

These types of fraud schemes/e-mails have been around for years. Both e-bay and AuctionArms have warned their customers from time to time. In fact, AuctionArms provides a permanent warning on their web site.

I have gotten emails from paypal before to "update" my info with them. Only problem is I don't use Paypal, never have signed up to use them either. I just delete them all.

I asked the wife about getting messages from ebay, she "thought" that the only time you would get a message from them would be when you actually login to the site itself. Unless it is a email confirming that you either bid on an item or won or were outbid on an item. But never to confirm ANY info through an email like you mentioned.

I got an email the other day saying I won 550,00 Euros and a blue car?  The only thing I need to do was give them my full name, social, address, mother's maiden name and a photo of myself.  That was a complete giveaway right there.  But I'm sure someone sent them all the info they needed.

Over the past year I've gotten the same message, somebody has got into your account and we need to update your info.  From a security standpoint, and to curb identity theft, NEVER, EVER give any of your personal infomation to somebody you don't know.

I almost slipped up the first time with the fake Ebay message, and got locked out.  Finally got that fixed and I now change my password about every two to three months just to keep people guessing.  Even me at times.

I'm sorry it happened to you.

I've received lots of these such email and have gotten to the point that I don’t report them to EBay or Pay pal unless there a new spoof. The spoofs come and go in spurts may get 1 a week or 4 a week.

As said above just delete them or report them but never respond to them.

As for the poster that said he only uses MO that isn’t safe either, I've had sellers say they never received the money or never respond to emails and not send the item won. Pay pal has saved me well over $200 this year alone on bad sellers on EBay.

I hope you get it all worked out.

Sorry to hear about that messed up situation.

What they call that is "phishing".  You're emailed a link to some bank, auction or other company/site that you belong to in hopes that you take the bait and put in your personal info.

I use eBay to purchase parts for a couple rifles and my 1911A1.  Sometimes I make out good, sometimes I pay a lil more then buying it from a dealer.  I do so because I got rid of my credit cards and use Paypal so that I can only spend what I have.

i have received emails saying the same thing but i dont even have an account with ebay!! so i just delete them.
i have been told that there are some scammers out there that have a website set up to look just like ebay except for some minor changes that you wouldnt notice. they have great deals on items they know you are interested in and when you send the money you never hear from them. i go to ebay regularly just to look and sometimes the website looks different from other times. i dont know which is the real ebay and which isnt so i know i wont be joining ebay as a member.

I had to share my experience here also. I fell for the request 4 years ago but wasn't as lucky as some here. The information that I supplied, developed into purchases on ebay and other sites. With this information, a credit card account was opened in my name, $150 was deposited in good faith and a $10,000 credit limit was established.......with all the correct information. The local police questioned me up and down and wouldn't tell me where the goods were being shipped. It took me 3 months to get $800 back into my local bank account that the theives swindled me out of. I was lucky enough to have received the credit card statement before any transactions were made against it but the corporation  wouldn't tell me where the $150 was going. Their only reply was that it wasn't mine so don't worry about it. I also learned that this is a typical scam and that the account will sit dormant for a month or so to eliminate suspicion. Then, big ticket items like major appliances, furniture or lawn equipment will be charged in one day, maxing out the account. FYI

well i dont have a paypal account with a credit card and this is another reason why. i havent ever had a problem with people on ebay or here, selling or buying. but the administrators really have their heads up their butts on this one.

it was my mistake but they havent made one movement to fix anything and they are letting sellers lose their fees to ebay and really setting everyone off when they could simply send an email to everyone involved saying what happened. sounds like a cheap way for them to get to keep those fees and have em relist the item and get fees again.

I just opened a Paypal account using a credit card with a $500 limit. And I'm very guarded about what information I send online.

Some years ago sombocy opened CC acounts in me and my wife's name. Then they maxed them out. All I did was call the customer service and file a plice report. Sign an affidavit, and I was done. I guess I got off easy. :?
