looking for a varmit/ target rifle

I would suggest a mil dot scope.  Also as noted the Harris and also Buttler Creek Rock Mount ........I think they are called,  anyways I have one, Bi-Pods also have a stud for a sling.  Yes,  you will want a good padded sling.

Make sure the bi-pod fits you for a prone position.  Probably somewhere between 8"-13" depending on your build.  Have the gun shop that you buy all this from put a pod on for you and lay prone on the floor to check size for you.  If it seems high as if you need something under your elbow,  do not get it.  In the field the ground is not level like the floor and at times will magnify this.
If you don't get one that fits you it will drive you nuts in the field.  90% of your woodchuck shots will be taken from prone.

Find out the barrel twist rate from the manufactures web site or gun shop.  Ask on here "what is ammo for this caliber twist rate" before you buy the gun,  to those who are using that caliber and twist rate on here.  Start out with boxes of 20 in a couple of the suggested grains to try in your rifle.

Enjoy the outdoors........

i was thinking......There are a lot of deer around here........would a .243 be too big for varmit and target.....or will it work just as fine as the .223?

whats the recoil like on the .243?.....i will be shooting lots of targets...dont want my arm sore for football/

whats the range/ accuracy differnce  between the .243/.223??

sorry for the annoyance

thanks

not really but it is quite a bit above a .223. you will definitely know it went off. in fact my stevens 200 has a plastic stock and i dont really like the amount of recoil that gets passed on to me. now i am not saying it hurts or that its bad but it does seem to affect my shooting a little bit because i live in ohio and we dont have a deer season and thus dont really have a reason to shoot rifles much, other than a varmint caliber with almost no recoil.

i would rather have a wood stock on this particular gun because the stock doesnt seem to dampen recoil much at all, almost all of it goes to the shooter. like i said its not excessive but for a first time shooter it might bug you.

why not check into the savage combo guns (heavier wood stocks), you get a gun and a scope for like $450 total and you dont have to fight with mounting and etc. the scope usually isnt the best quality but i doubt if youll wear it out anytime soon.

hmmm this wil make me think for a while.....

i really dont know what the recoil is equivalent to......any examples?????

is it like getting punched by your dad...or your younger brother......lol

i'm a running back in football, 15years old,.....so i'm used to taking hits....i guess....I want to be able to shoot 25 shots without having it feeel sore the next day

can you watch the shot hit the target through the scope with a .243?

gosh..i just cant make up my mind.....!!!

sorry for any annoyance

Your a similar shopper to me.  I went into a gun shop a few years back intending to buy a 22 auto pistol and ended up walking out with a S&W 44 Mag.

buckskin, lol. you and i have something in common then  :)

I would say tha .243 is less than a 20 gauge shotgun by a bit... it kicks and you know it but 25 shots wont leave you sore. i was just saying that since youre new to rifles maybe a heavier gun would be best in .243.

Have you given any thought to the .204Ruger?  I doubt that it will be moved by the wind as much as some of the others.  It has a velocity of around 4000fps and seems to be quite accurate.  I have the .222Rem.Mag. which is based on the same case, and its served me well for some years now.  I'm not wild about the 17s, ownig a .17Rem.  The bullet is just too light for most conditions.  Just  one mabs opinion.  Best wishes.

To get a better handle on what's availabe in models and calibers I'd recommend you take a look at www.savagearms.com
Remington and even Ruger might be expensive for you right now.  Best wishes.
