Do I need to size?
« on: April 10, 2003, 08:53:28 AM »
My bullets are coming out .477 but my cylinder throats are .476, can I try these as cast? or will preasure go way up and hurt me and or my gun? I am thinking they will be ok as cast as this should stop any gas cutting, does this sound right? I always thought that you should be able to push a bullet through the throat easy but without being loose.    And thanks to all of you who have been helping me!!!

The 0.001" difference in size won't hurt anything.

Cast bullets are commonly sized to 0.001" larger than the groove diameter of the barrel.  i.e. .358" for the .357 Magnum, .430" for the .44 Magnum, etc.

Also, your bullet alloy will make a small difference in the diameter of the slugs coming out of the mold.

So long as the loaded rounds fit the chamber, you'll be ok.  If you load them out to the second canalure, you may very well find that the rounds won't chamber in your gun.  You don't have to worry about pressures, or accuracy though, they will shoot just fine.

PS, if you haven't seen it, here's a write up I've done on loading for the 480.  http://www.serveroptions.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=25;t=000222

As you can tell, I'm rather fond of the round, and it's ability to shoot cast bullets accurately.  I have a new 400 gr gas checked bullet I'll be testing soon, and am considering a Keith SWC in ~270 gr for a good plinking load.
