A couple of weeks ago something was killing my granpas chickens. Not eating them just killing them. So he set a steel trap for it. The next day he had a possum in the trap. He set it again the next night. When he went to check it in the morning the trap although it had been tied down was GONE. Any ideas ? What could make it over a fence with a trap on it's leg? What would get caught in a trap and not make godawful racket?

Next time dont tie it down,attach a heavy log to it or something of that nature that an animal the size of a coyote could just barely drag.That way they cant get the leverage to pull free and draggin it will make them tired and leave an easy to follow trail.Any smart coyote wont let himself get caught a second time though, not without an elaborate setup.I think it was a large coon,you said there was a fence.How high ? coyote would go under it,coon would go over it or thru it.

Might be one of those little people we have been talking about,I would imagine they have little knives to cut the rope with,try a cable next time I doubt they have little bolt cutters...

My guess whatever it was chewed through the rope. I have heard stories from my grandfather about when he used to trap. Some animals will actually chew there leg off just to get out of a leg hold trap.
