Back from Shilo Bowhunt-Oklahoma
« on: August 20, 2003, 03:40:00 AM »
Back about a week now-had a good hunt thou it was very hot.  I took a nice Ram the 1st day & in 3 sittings (2 afternoons-1 morning) I saw over 30 hog-14 shooters within 25 yards-had 2 missed shots on 125#150# Boar 1@20 & 1@ 25 yards (discovered broken sight pin).  Resighted bow in camp & next evening took a 100# sow (what I wanted) @ 15 yards..  Another Bowhunter from Texas took 1 100# hog & another around 150#.
Matt & Cheryl were super hosts & the camp is clean & comfortable.
I had a 9 year old boy along to observe-his 1st trip ever to the hunting world-he is hooked for life.  Good luck in your upcoming seasons.
always thankful

Sounds like a fun time.  Good thing you were able to re-sight in at camp and get that sow.  What was your  shot placement and broadhead?  How did the sow respond to the shot?   markc   :-)

Arrow hit just behind the shoulder (3-4") & broke the spine exiting out ribcage on other side-arrow went almost to fletch (not quite).
Dropped in tracks.  It's all on video.
I was up approx. 15 feet & the shot was around 15 yards..Easton xx75 2117, 29" with Rocky Mountain 3 Blade 125gr. Razor & 60# compound.
It does a number for sure.
I have  taken since Dec. with this setup 1-80# 25 yds. Pass thru chest.
1-100# sow pass thru both hips 15 yard shot (bad hit but only went 50 yds) 1-150# Boar  25 yard shot-pass thru both lungs  1-250# Boar-1 25 yd. shot thru guts 2nd shot 15 yds. thru chest taking out heart on exit.
Big hog roast at my sons this Sat.  mmmmmm.
I have bowhunted 45 years now & of all the Biggame I have taken including Elk, Black Bears & Caribou I think the wild hog is the toughest any bowhunter can encounter in our lower 48 states AND they just might show you who is toughest in the woods.

thanks for the detailed info.  I agree that the feral hog is one tough customer.  Sounds like you have been very successful on them with your bow though.  I will be picking up a nice sized sow from the processor this afternoon and she will be some good eating ham steaks on the smoker if we don't get rained out  Sat.

My last post if you see was 2003 on this-since then I have been several more times & just returned May 24th of this year.  7 of us took 6 hogs, 2 Rams with 2 others missed.  Great time even in the heat-I took about a 140# hog my 1st evening of the hunt.  20 yard shot & he went 50 yards dropping in a creek (that was fun for an old man to get out).
I had 7 hogs come in around 6pm (went on stand at 5pm).  Got it all on film.
I have Bowhunted hogs in several places in Texas & Oklahoma & Shiloh is by far the best for hog hunting during the daytime AND the price is hard to beat.  They do have a web site-Shiloh Bowhunting Ranch, Sronewall, Oklahoma.  They are also asposor on Bowsite.com.
