Laminate Stock Care???
« on: October 06, 2005, 02:04:53 PM »
I am considering getting a Ruger 10/22RB-JZ (the Jacaranda Laminate stock), but I have a few questions, if any one can answer them, I'd give ya a BIG THANK YA!
   1. Do these stocks require extra care?
   2. Are these stocks "durable" enough for harsh conditions for a week a year? (I go on a hunt to North Manitou Island every year, so it would have to tolerate rain, and cold weather for 7 days a year).

I think these stocks are beautiful, and would be more than willing to give it the extra care that it might need, so any one out there with some "words o' the wise", I'd gladly hear ya out!!!!
  Thank you!!!

If you can contact  Ruger, they will be able to tell you straight from the horse's mouth how the stock will stand up.

Generally, laminated stocks will hold up better than regular wood under harsh conditions.  Not as good as synthetics, though.  However, I have seen stocks that have delaminated (both on Marlin Model 60's).

All this being said, once you talk to Ruger, if you still have some concerns, then you might look into giving the stock a coat of a marine-grade epoxy finish.  This should make the stock very durable to moisture, especially if you remember to coat the barrel channel, inletting, and under the buttplate.

Thanks. I looked ALL over Rugers site, and cant find ANYTHING! I have considered using a good unscented paste wax also. I have tried "googleing" the subject, but get tons of hard wood floor stores, but they don't get into specific care of the wood. I know a synth stock would be the best choice, but it just don't have the same feel as wood does, or the beauty.

Thank you!!! It took some "digging", but I found the answers to my questions without having to ask them!!!

It seems they hold up as well as regular wood, but do need a little TLC to keep their beauty!!!

I'll be picking mine up today!!!!
