.32 Ideal cartridge
« on: March 01, 2006, 11:16:44 AM »
Hi all,

Does anyone here have experience with, or opinions about, SS rifles chambered for .32 Ideal?

I hear that both Stevens and Winchester made rifles in this chambering. I don't see (.32 Ideal) rifles listed for sale, so I am guessing they are a fairly rare item. Any thoughts on what rifle could be rechambered for this cartridge?

Thanks,

Stephen

About 25 years ago I owned a LoWall Winchester in.32 Ideal Chambering . The rifle , as I recall, had a 30" #1 barrel, the coil spring action with single set trigger and a windage adjustable Lyman folding tang rear sight.
As I was able to determine at  the time manufacture was in 1909 as it was the first year for the coil spring action and the last year that the .32 Ideal was offered.
I believe that Stevens also offer this chambering in the Model 44. I believe that bore and groove diameter were oversize for .32 caliber and the chambering could offer no competition for the excellent 32/40 Winchester/Ballard
Brass at the time was unavailable except in the collectors market.I hope this is helpful.

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply.

I had that Winchester myself many years ago, before I knew enough to keep it. I still have two original bullets.

The 32/40 Winchester/Ballard is certainly well thought of, but nostalgia for my Grandad's choice cannot be ignored, plus it is a straight walled case and I shoot paper patch with powder compression. Bertram has brass at a couple of bucks each. I'm just wondering about rifle availablility. I have heard also that the bore and groove are oversize for 32.

Thanks again,

Stephen
