I will be picking up a Winchester 94 in 30-30 tomorrow, won it at a dinner :grin: . I was wondering what some of your favorite loads are for it. I'll probably be using it mainly for targets, deer and hogs if possible.

Powder: 32.0 grains of W-748
Primer: Winchester Large Rifle
Case: Winchester
Firearm: Winchester Model 94
Optics: Winchester open sights
Velocity: 2051 FPS @ 15' from muzzle
Accuracy: 5-shot, 50-yard groups of 1"

I have two,tried andtrue hunting loads.
170 gr Hornaday#3060-31.0 Gr IMR#3031-vel 2080 FPS-one shot kill @100 yds
170 gr PP cast,pure lead-30.5 gr IMR#3031-vel 2100 FPS-one shot kill @60 yds.

The only change I would make on that data, is the Primer and bullet.
Bullet : Sierra 170 gr .30-30 bullet
Primer: CCI 250 has worked well with that load.

I have loaded for my Model 94's and my dad's Marlin 336 for a good many years. My dad still uses the 30-30 for hunting deer, but I have gone to mostly handguns anymore. Regardless, a load that worked really well in both models was the Hornady 150 RN, CCI-200, and 30 grains of H-335. My dad kill several deer with this load. We now use strictly cast bullets. Thanks guys! I knew you wouldn't let me down :grin: . I already have some Hornady 150 RN and some 170 Speer JFP's on the way along with some other supplies from Midway. I am also going to try some 110 grn Hornady RN loads for varmints and squirrels :wink:

Another variation on this theme is my favorite 30-30 load- 32.5 grains of 748, Hornady 170 FPs, CCI 250 primers.

My 1951 model 94 likes 33g of IMR 4064, Win primer and brass, and Sierra 170g FP's. It will put 3 touching at 50 yards. The bullet is traveling at around 2160. I like to use 150's in our bolt action .30-30's, but my Winchester will not shoot better than 2" at 50 yards with them.

For Deer:

* Federal (Speer) Grand Slam 150-gr. or the new Fusion Bonded version. Speer makes the most aerodynamic 30-30 bullet out there with 1,115 ft. lbs of energy at 200 yards. Everyone else is at 990 and lower.

For Larger Critters:

* Federal 170-gr. Nosler Partition

Snowshoe: your M94 should do better than that, although the Winchester sights on the 94s are good for about 2" at 50 yds and about 4" at 100 yds but you should be getting one hole groups at 50 yds. Have you ever firelapped the barrel on that 94??? I have an older M94 in 30 WCF - the rifle was made in 1927 I think. It sat behind a farmers back door for a long number of years but the bore was still sharp when I got it and she didn't shoot any better than yours does. So I firelapped the barrel and closed up the groups to a one-hole group at 50 yds and under 3" at 100 (I just couldn't see any better than that). HTH. Mikey.

Another thing you can do to improve accuracy on the Winchester 94 is to:

* Loosen the barrel band so it's just snug.

* Check the forearm stock for tightness around or near the first few inches ahead of the action.

* Free float the barrel inside the stock starting 2" - 3" ahead of the action.

Joe the ballistic tip and spire points should be used one in chamber and one in mag you don't want a magzine full of them.

You are correct sir, I just use one in the T/C Contender. The pointy bullets should not be used in a tube magazine fed rifle.

I use the Nosler 170 grain Partition Round Nose bullet in Winchester cases, WLR primers, and 30-31 grains of IMR 4895. Good load in my rifles.

Winchester brass
Winchester Primers
IMR 4064 33.5grains
Speer 150g Flatnose.
Winchester 94 20" barrel
TruGlo Iron Sights (much better than original factory iron sights)
1" groups at 100 yards

Tried 33.0, 33.4, and 33.7 grains as well, but the 33.5g load had best groups. Make sure to let the barrel cool down between groups. If you are hunting, you'll be shooting out of a cold barrel.
