38-55 Strikes Again
« on: December 11, 2005, 12:54:26 PM »
Shot a doe this morning, long range.....20 yards  Made a big walking circle today, was windy as all get out and my back hurt to much to stand long, so I struck out across the old coal mine and was on my way back. Mine had been over planted with pines in neat rows, I was walking along one row when just ahead I saw a deer step past a pin in the row to my left. I stopped, cocked the gun and slowly eased left to see what was there, and she was  not more than 25 yards ahead, looking back at me. All I could see was her head and neck, so I centered her neck and fired. Two others I had not seen (the pines and undergrowth are thick, 20 yards was max range in any direction) took off, she dropped.

Shot was perfect, bullet size hole in, 1 1/2" hole out, neck broken. Load was same as last time (I had loaded up 10 rounds for the season) Lyman 379449 (264 grains as cast) 24.5 grains of WC680 (AA1680 for those not using milsurp) Winchester large rifle primers. This load will put 3 in one hole at 50 yards all day, and brings down deer quite handily :-D (pun intended)

I had trouble with the gun Friday evening. Was walking to my stand and ever time I moved the rifle I felt the barrel move in the frame. Got back to the house and it took a .002" shim to make it close tight. I've not yet JB'd it in but man I'm tired of the things that go wrong with NEF's. While they are easy to work on, that one has to work on them at all is too much. Re sited the rifle in Saturday after lunch, groups had moved vertically 1 1/2" low from POA as set prior to looseness.

Hunted with the Remington Model 7 in 7-08 I purchased from De41mag all of Saturday, saw nothing. Still 6 weeks of hunting left to bloody this rifle, but boy I really do like that 38-55, it is a deer slayer for sure, and that 28" tube ain't no problem in close quarters either.

Congrats JP.
Good shooting. You are right the 28" barrel is no handicap at all. My shot  guns all doubles have 27 and 28" barrels no sweat they handle like a dream.

I think most Handi's have too short a barrel, but not everybody is of the same opinion.

Yes, and I've shot about 1200-1300 rounds through it, the overwhelming majoritya 250 grian bullet at 1100 fps, a no strain load. I wonder if the extra barrel length has acted like a lever and sprung the bottom lip of the barrel catch. I'm careful not to let the gun fall open, but geez, 1300 opening cycles and it needs shimmed? Give me a break.

John my 223 has lots and lots of rounds through it and its still tight.maybe that long barrel does put alittle strain on it.dont know for sure??

maybe its time for you to get a G2 like i did and you could shoot the 375 winchester.that one would be right up your alley.maybe even a 357max or a 445sm.sounds like you are hunting in an area where the HAND CANNON could really shine.just a thought on my part

jeff223, I was headed to G2, Encore land when I bought De41mag's Model 7. TC only offers the 375/38-55 through the custom shop. while the 375 JDJ is a factory offering. Fella at the gunshow has 'em for $289.00  Best price I found on a new frame was the same...$289.00, your choice, G2 or Encore. I'd still like one, or a 94AE in 375, saw an ad in shotgun news for a Winchester 1885 in 38-55.....$1195.00 out the door  I once had one of those in 45-70, shot like a house afire. One of  the best shooting rifles I have ever owned. But then so is my NEF 38-55.... just seems I'm going through a "fix it" stage.

Let's see;
 a 20 yard shot with a NEF BC = a 19 yard net distance.
Next time you get a shot that close, take two steps forward and wack the deer between the eyes with the muzzle end of the BC. It just might fix the loose problem.

Geez John, why don't you take up bowhunting ! :D

  Nice job! 8)

Way to go John;

Two for two, that's batting a thousand, with the 38-55. Who would have thought that the little 38-55 would be a real deer getter.
Uh, did I put a curse on that Model 7FS when I sold it to you. I don't think so.  :?
I wish H&R would make a 25-35 caliber. That would be nice.
Again, John, congratulations on another deer.
