I bought a fine looking Ruger #1 in 45-70 and I am considering putting a peep sight on it.

http://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/ has a spiffy looking peep that will fit where the rear scope ring usually sits.

Has anyone here ever bought one of these if so, how did you like it?

I did do a search but haven't found what I was looking for.

Got one for my pair of #1s. Works as advertised for sure. My eyes just aren' comfortable with regular open sights and this option is well made, reasonalbly priced an requiers no drill and tap action. I also have mine set up with a Merit adj. apeture which really helps adjust for eyes and conditions. Cons: Not made to quickly readjust and not as low-profile/sano as the XS sites(which do require drilling and maybe tapping too).
They do readily move from gun to gun so that is a plus. Webbshooter gives it 3 1/2 stars of 5.
P.S. Fast too. If Elmer Fudd had a #1 with a peep, Bugs Bunny would of been a cartoon footnote.

I bought one for my #1 45-70 thinking it would be great, but I got rid of iyt right away...the aperture is what holds it in position for up and down as I recall...anyway if you want a good big hole for hunting and not just taget shooting, it doesnt work...think Williams and Lyman make a good sight but it needs to be taped for it...I always found when using a peep in the woods, the bigger the hole the better..that sight is a very good idea, they just need to change that one thing and I would buy one in a heartbeat...just my thoughts.....WW1

These are fine sights and are precision adjustable for both windage and elevation. I suspect their repeatability when removed and replaced is pretty good too, if you are careful in how you do it. If you want a large aperture, as some prefer, all you have to do is take the screw in aperture out or drill out the one provided. I like the idea of the Merit adjustable aperture myself. In short, these sights make the #1/3 an even handier and slicker looking rifle than they already are.

I looked into drilling the aperture as you describe, and yes it could be done, but you could never make it as large as other brands are by taking the aperture out...also if you misjudge and try to drill it to big then it will come apart leaving you no way to tighten the up and down adjustment adjustment...to me that is the weakness of this sight...if you dont mind having a small hole to look through then it will work fine, but for hunting inmy oppinion, the peep isnt big enough for fast shooting...my point is take a Williams, a Lyman, Redfield, or any other peep and compare by taking the aperture all the way out and putting it back in..my first statement still stands, if they would fix this one minor problem, then I will buy another one...to each his own, but that is my thought......WW1

Don't know if it would work on your rifle, but my Williams catalog show their Foolproof available for the Ruger No. 1-B. Sight number is FP-RSS, and they recommend a 7/16 - .312N front sight. Not quite the same looks as the one you are looking at, or the Williams WGRS, but on the other hand it is click adjustable and has been around for ages. I have used them since I got my first Win. 94 in 1965 and they worked great for me until my eyes aged.

I agree with Winter Hawk...I saw a #1 in 45-70 with the Williams and it was a pleasure to look through....have also used it on my Savage 110's...but it is a decision you have to make...WW1
