Need help with red dot scope

Hello, New around here.  Have a question I hope somebody can help with.   I have a Ruger SBH Hunter in 45 colt that I'd like to mount a red dot scope on.  I had picked out the Bushnell model, but the mounting slots for the rings that are milled into the barrel are too close together for this one to fit.  Was wondering what other options I would have for mounting this scope, or if someone can recommend another model that would work.  The staff at the two stores I was at today weren't very helpful.

the bushnell and tasco cheapys i have came with what looks like a sunshade that screws on and makes the thing longer so that it fits in the rings but i have serious doubts that one of these cheapys would hold up to the recoil of a centerifire pistol. Id be looking at an aimpoint or leupold if i wanted something reliable on a handgun.

arcticcat, first off welcome to Graybeard.  :D

You may want to consider taking back the red-dot you have and get a Millet or a Ultra-dot.  I have these red-dots mounted on several handguns. I use the Ultra dot on my S&W500 MAG, the Millet on a Ruger Super Redhawk 44 MAG and a Millet on a Ruger blackhawk. I also have a Millet on my 44 MAG contender. One they have all withstood a lot of pounding from these guns and never failed me. The ultra dot on my 500 Mags has well over 2000 round of heavy loaded rounds, without one problem.  Good luck and hope this helps.  :D

Welcome!

I would like to to take this time to stress the point that ALL of my tasco and bushnell purchases have been a resounding failure.  Note I say all because I am not only a slow learner but also cheap!!  I do understand that we (collectively) do not buy cheap optics because we have a plethora of spare cash on hand and would rather spend it in other things, rather we are trying to get a suitable product for our needs and hope that we can get it for less.  The adage "you get what you pay for"  was nobly penned for this and only this occasion.  Cheap optics are by their very nature... cheap!   The passage of time or the signing of trade agreements does nothing to improve their quality.
 "Buy the best you can afford" is a common and well meaning statement that you will do well to heed in most all affairs.  It bears mentioning because of its one simple flaw... It is the supreme lack of cash which binds you to spend your hard earned dough on an inferior product.  My revised sentiment for such occasions is don't buy anything until you have enough money saved to purchase a product suitable to your needs.   In essence don't buy junk, even if that is all you can afford. Save, save, save, until you can get what you really need.  That is the hardest part of all of this for me.  I'm still locked in a daily struggle with my "cheap" demons.  Good luck and thanks for listening as i filled some time waiting for the day's festivities to begin.  HAPPY 4th!!  :D

Thanks for the replies.  I hadn't bought the bushnell yet.  I'm glad to hear that the ultra-dot is good, that was the one I found that would fit.  They wanted about $150 for that one, does that sound about right?  Would the Leupold fit into the factory mounting grooves on the barrel? I wasn't trying to be cheap looking at the bushnell, that was the one both gunsmiths said would fit.  I was willing to dole out the $300 for the Nikon, but no one could figure out how to mount it.  (I was at a Scheels and a Gander Mountain).  I'll check with my local gun store again this week and see what he has; pretty slim pickings the last time I was in there.

This looks like a great site;  I'll probably be around asking plenty of questions.  This Ruger is my first hunting handgun.  Hope to try it for whitetail this fall.  Might even bring it to MT for mulies too.  Been messing with some handloads for it.

I've been really disapointed by scopes and red dots on handguns over the years.
The ONLY thing that has lasted for me is a Trijicon Reflx sight. Aimpoints have good rep's, even with the military and they come in different lengths. I've never owned one. My most recent Millet died today, the holo/crap sights are no good, I even managed to buy a bad Leupold 2X.
I think someone is telling me to use open sights!
You'd have to use an adapter for the Reflex, but mine has rode many hard rounds on Desert Eagles, Marlin LA's, Freedom Arms and T/C single shots. One tough mo' fo'.

You'll learn a great deal from the learned gentlemen on this forum. Many years of hunting, shooting, collecting and gunsmithing are represented here. Now some of us are as crazy as a road lizzard, but everyone is friendly and conducts themselves in a mostly civilized manner. Sometimes you may wonder what civilization they came from, but you'll figure it out.

As to the red dot, I put a Bushnell Trophy on a .44 Bisley a year ago, and I have yet to get it zeroed in. Might have to give up on it.

Well, I ended up getting an Ultra-Dot.  Got it mounted on Fri. & sighted it in with some light reloads I make.  Hope to mess with it next weekend with some heavier loads.  Thanks for the replies all.

articcat; you will like that Ultra-Dot good choice. One thing to remember with mounting any sight on a large bore handgun. The more rings, or cross clamps the better. I have a Bushnell Trophy on a 12-inch .411JDJ mounted with three Weaver steel rings. Solid as a rock and it has held up with some real earth moving loads. When I first started handgun hunting in 1989 I killed more scopes that deer. You name the scope and I killed it. They would move and tear themselves apart. I was shown how to mount a scope the right way by a Cajun from the swamps of S. LA. Haven’t killed a scope since.

I am mounting an Ultra Dot on my S & W 629 Mountain .44Magnum and am wondering if the zeroing procedure is the same as for scopes?  columnate then paper?  I recall reading somewhere that the dot needs to be moved toward the bullet impact if off in windage or elevation?  What procedure did you use?

i made the same adjustments as I do on a scope. If I am low I move the adjustment up and so on.  :D

So did I and all seems to be working fine.  I understand from reading your other messages, that the Ultradot is pretty well able to handle recoil?  I like mine.
