15" Encore .375 JDJ questions
« on: September 29, 2005, 07:20:37 AM »
Until recently, I was determined to try to get by with one barrel for my Encore -- a 15" .260 Rem in SS.  I guess it would do the coyote in, but not so good for black bear/elk.  I'm going to purchase two barrels -- probably a .223 and a .375 JDJ.  Two questions: 1) Am I going to need a muzzle brake to shoot the hand cannon comfortably (I have right wrist problems already); and 2) How much do you guys estimate it will cost to reload for the .375 JDJ?  By the way, just want to say thanks so much to all who participate on this forum.  I have learned so much!  Thanks to you, too, Graybeard!

I have a 16.25 inch and a 14 inch 375JDJ and I seriously doubt that you would want to shoot them with out a brake. Wrist or no wrist problems.
Don't know what dies are going for these days but mine cost $68.

100 444 Marlin brass $
Pound of powder $20
7000 grains in a pound of powder
45 grains per round you get 155 rounds per pound
50 grains per round you get 140 rounds per pound
100 Primmers $2
100 Hornady 220 FP Bullets $22
50 Hornady 270 SP $18

IMO, A brake is a waste of money unless you have wrist problems.

I've been shooting a 14" BBL in 375JDJ since 1988 and have found no need for a brake even shooting full house loads.

A brake is going to thrust the recoil back instead of up as it does without a brake.

Seriously, I don't see much difference in the recoil of the 375JDJ to that of my 44mag with 320 gr. cast.

Just my .02

:D

I'll give another thumbs down to the 375 JDJ with a muzzle break. Mine is an unbraked 14" and I find the recoil tolerable off the bench and unnoticable in the field.

I have a surplus blued  15" 22-250 Encore barrel if you want a bit more zing than a 223 for your small centerfire.

375 JDJ and 223

Thanks all for your input -- it's exactly what I need to hear.  Now, if I can learn a bit more about the accuracy of the 45 Mongo out of my .45LC/.410 15" barrel, I'll be ready to purchase.  Johnly, if the 22-250 were a ss barrel, I'd take you up on it.  I confess, I don't know much about the difference between the .223 and the 22-250.  Does the 22-250 have that much more poop?  How much for the 15" 22-250?  OOPS, does the ffl disclaimer need to be in place before we can discuss that?  Again, thanks all!
