10" 444 Marlin
« on: January 21, 2003, 04:14:09 PM »
Has anyone shot a 444 Marlin in a 10" Contender barrel ?   Can you use factory 444 Marlin loads in the Contender?  The manual I have, shows loads for the Encore but not the Contender.  Thanks for any input. Lone Hunter

Way too much for a 10" tube

a 444 marlin in a 10" tube? I think you would be better off with the 445 Super mag. The marlin is way too much powder in a 10" tube and while your are at it If you Buy the 444 in a 10" rent someone else to shoot it for you and have a nice warm wet cloth ready to wipe the blood from his fore head every time he pulls the trigger. I have a 444 in a 14 and it is a real Monster.
Hey my opinion

Well now. Welcome to the world where you stay on the porch if you aint one of the big dogs! I have one and been shooting it for years. It outperforms the 445 supermag by 150FPS. Choose the right powder. Factory Remington 265's will crease yer forehead if you don't parry the recoil, and for some reason they really hurt. I love it! I shot a white-tail doe with mine--length-wise. She jumped up form the bed at about 15yds, straight away, scope was on the hole in her bung-I missed the hole by an inch to the right. the 285gr hard cast slug entered and traversed the whole length of spine and exited about 2" posterior to her right ear. Needless to say she was dead on the bound down! Beings I do pathology and necropsy for a living, I decided to excise the wound channel-it was devastating. no lead fragments and a very huge hole near her ear. The would channel was awesome to say the least. I shot another small buck a year later, high broadside shoulder. Broke both shoulders and the spinal column going through. Instant death--but, they were both spinal shots. However, I do feel confident I would've killed this deer if it was standing behind a tree! Yes the recoil is something to behold and do not take it lightly, but magnify the results of your 44 maggie by a whole lot. I shot 2 scopes off the gun before I went T'SOB--neither scope broke by the way, only the bases. One was a Leupold, and the other was a lowly Tasco. I was impressed cuz I didn't think the Tasco could last 10 rds on it. I put the Leupold back on. Why chance it. I am actually going to hunt Elk with my 14" 444 this year. I have 4 already. 1 with a 45LC, 1 with  35rem and  2 with 375JDJ. I'm gonna use the same load, but I'm actually thinking of a 300 JHP or maybe the XTP. The 285 and 320 hardcast are hard to beat for all-out penetration. If you want to get everyone's attention at the range, get one! You'll love it.
The first shot is the best shot, it may be your only shot!  Do it with a single-shot.

i shoot a 10" 444 also. i was told on this forum to expect to bleed and have a dislocated thumb if i was foolish enuff to actually shoot it. yes, it does have some recoil to it. no, its not unbearable. and.......i have yet to bleed and both thumbs are still attached where they are supposed to be.i have only shot factory loads in it as i havent had a chance to reload any for myself. i also agree that it out performs the 445 supermag. at our (private) range we have 2 sheets of steel set up to shoot at. 1/4' at 25 yds and 3/8' at 50yds. the 445 will sorta dent the 3/8 but the 444 blew a HUGE hole right thru it. to me, that is a clear improvement.

You all best chrono the 10"
The 444 in a ten will only outdo the 445 by 80 fps with 265 gr. loads
Just way too much powder to be useful. FUN yes but Not much better than the 445 in a 10" tube.
Now in the 14" tube THE WORLD is happy with the 444.
Guys this is just like the 7-30 in a 10" tube compared to the 7TCU
A little more power LOTS more kick and not much better terminal preformance.
You should see about 1850-2100 fps out of the 14" tube and only 1650-almost 1800 in the 10"

:D I have a 444 in 10" and love it shooting 250 nosler at a clocked speed of 2000fps and accuracy is outstanding even at 200 yards knock the rams over every time off of rest of some sort, even shoot a 300 grain sierra at 1900fps,yes recoil is there but can manage to pop off around 15-20 rounds or untill my hand gets sweaty.would recommend it to anyone with heavy handgun experience.by the way all loads do not show any signs of max.but got to be getting close.my bbl.is a rechambered 44 mag. and done by J.D Jones.

HAPPY HUNTING

I love mine, except for the first shot blowing off the scope
Point of refrence, get at minimum dual dovetail mounts.
Recoil is not a bleeding proposition any more than it is with any other high power cartridge. Those who say otherwise are just itching for a fight. If you hold it like it's a 9mm, yeah she's going to bite, but hold he like a she's a .44 Mag and you do just fine.
