Workin' on a mold project
« on: October 02, 2005, 04:08:09 PM »
For those with 35's who may be interested, I'm trying to put together a group buy mold for a 35 caliber 250 grain cast bullet with gas check. The idea is to have something that will readily work in a 357 Max, 35 Remington, 356/358 Winnie and even the 35 Whelen. Many consider the 250 a light bullet for this caliber, and I would agree, but a great many 35's have been made using 1:16 and 1:18 twists and won't stabilize anything heavier, as well, smaller case cartridges like the 35 Remington, 356/358 Win don't have the capacity to handle bullets heavier than 250 well. But most important there is a decided lack of bullet molds available in this caliber and of this weight. If you're interested check out the "Group Buys" forum at www.castboolits.gunloads.com My main interest in this is to get a heavy bullet for my 357 Max to improve the ignition performance of small powder charges, to get better low velocity performance. But it ought to be a dandy in the other 35's as well.

If your main goal is to improve ignition of small charge weights by increasing the loading density, you're going at it the wrong way IMO.  You'd be better off to use a bullet with a short nose and a long body to better fill the case - something like the old Lyman Loverin designs.  Lyman's 350457 (250 grains) in the correct diameter would be perfect for your use, keeping most of the long bullet within the case.

Trying to design a bullet which will meet your goal and still be useful in bottlenecked cases will result in very compromised performance in either or both.  A custom mold builder (LBT, etc) should be able to make a on-off mold for you and not require a minimum order.

If you wish to hawk the order here do as I've always insisited in the past. Put the full info here so folks do not need to go off to some other site to find it. That is the requirement I've always placed on these deals. I have no problem with them but they must stand alone in the thread on GBO about them and not require members go to any other site to participate.
