Family self defense: is it a good idea?

by Jay Allen

There’s a debate erupting down in Florida over the state’s new “Fight Force with Force” provisions. Under old law, home dwellers were not legally allowed to fire a weapon on a home intruder unless the dwellers had first tried (and failed) to flee. Under the new provisions, residents are allowed to fire upon an assailant immediately if they believe their lives are in immediate danger. The Brady Campaign, a gun control lobby, has responded by running a series of controversial ads in British newspapers, warning tourists their lives are in danger if they vacation in the Sunshine State.

What interests me here is the implication of this law for families. I don’t own a gun. But I’ve considered getting a permit and purchasing one for home protection. If some murderous thugs wage an assault on my house, I want more to protect us than our ability to beg for our lives. What’s stopped me? A fear that, even if I keep the weapon safely ensconced in a fingerprint-protected gun vault, I’ll one day do something stupid that puts my children’s lives in danger.

What say you? Is keeping a gun a good way to protect your family - or a perfect way to put them in danger?

*FW Note:

Is standing there with a stupid look on your face a better way to respond to an intruder raping your wife or molesting one of your children?

Maybe the intruder won't hurt you if you just act in a non-threatening manner...

Putz.

They may talk of a "New Order" in the  world, but what they have in mind is only a revival of the oldest and worst tyranny.   No liberty, no religion, no hope.   It is an unholy alliance of power and pelf to dominate and to enslave the human race.

How does owning a gun put your children at risk?

If you own a gun you should train everyone in the house how to use it and handle it safely. This is something a 3-year old can be taught. No one should be picking up a gun (even a toy) without first holding the barrel in a safe direction and then checking the gun to see if it is loaded. Safety first. Then as a parent you have to store the gun in a child safe mode. Locked and unloaded maybe. You can keep the bullets in your pocket and the gun somewhere else. Your children should not be able to access both the guns and the bullets at one time or location. That's why they make gun safes.

I sincerely hope that all liberals will practice what they preach and not own any weapons, just as I would hope that all liberals would avail themselves of abortion.  This should ensure that they will eventually be victimized and aborted out of existence.

First of all,I don't have any small children at home. But have kin that are small, but they all know about firearms,so no problem there.I feel that you should have protection on hand for you and your family. It is better to have it and not need it,than to need it and not have it.I have a gun in every room of my house,in my Jeep,my Dodge truck, even outside house in my out building.Every member of my family knows this, where they are and most important how to use them.I think education about firearms and their purpose and use is the key here.I think guns should only be own and use by people that have their heads screw on right,if you catch my driff.Good judgement is most important, cuz you can't take a bullet back.......Rick

Soooo.....

It looks like "The Brady Campaign" is essentially insulting British tourists by implying that most of them go on home invasion robbery sprees while on vacation?  I'm surprised there isn't an angry backlash by insulted Brits! :)

Best wishes,
