I ordered a scope rail for my 357, since my stock is the monte carlo.  I think this will be a 50-75 yard plinker, so I dont want a 3x9 power scope on it.  Im leaning to a a 1.5-4.5 blackpowder marketed scope.  Many have a small circle for the aiming point of the reticle.

Anyone use these, what are your thoughts on them.  Open to suggestion.  I dont want to spend much on it, especially since I just got a great deal on a Nikon, Id hate to spend the same money on a much lesser scope.

I had a scope like that on my .45-70 for quite a while. It worked wonderfully. You might look at  a swift 1x shotgun scope too. They're quite nice.

If you eyes are still good, you might try a Williams WGRS Peep sight.  They mount in the rear scope base holes and work REALLY well on my 44 mag barrel.

Midway has them for about $36.00

I took the fire sights off my huntsman & put them on the 357. Front sight hangs over the end of the barrel by an 1/8 of an inch or so & the contour is not quite right (have to sand sight to fit or epoxy) but just trying it out it worked great & hasn't moved

I think the Weaver Variable 1x-3x would be good for you.
It is reasonable priced about $120 on the net.
Has multicoated optics, quality made in Japan, large eye relief and very large field of view at any power.

Factory irons. Considering the limited range at which I'd use a .357 Mag. that's plenty. Yup my eyes are about as bad as any of yours for seeing up close with irons. Still I use them and do OK.

I a Simmons 4 X shotgun scope on my Maxie works great,
 Think my eyes are worse than than Greybeard's. I can not see
 without a scope even with glasses Marv.

4X BSA at Walley-world for less than $30.  It works well for me on my 1894C when I can pry it out of my wife Sue's  hands.  Actually it works better for her than it does for me because she shoots better than I do.  It's rough when your the third best shot in the family after the wife and daughter.  Good thing the dogs don't shoot.

I did the same thing for my 357 max and mounted a 4x Burris compact on it.  

Since then I have changed to this and I looooovvve it.  :grin:  Only gun I have without a scope.

Right now mines carring a shotgun scope, But the williams FP peep sight and a hornet front blade is what I hunt with. 8)

Mine wore a BSA 4x like Ranger J's for the better part of two years. I replaced it with a Simmons 3-9x40 8 pointer. Still cheap, but it works really well.

I fail to see the point of iron sights, in fact with only iron sights I can't see any point. A fella once tried to tell me that if your horse fell on your rifle the scope would be a sure goner. "And what of the stock and barrel?" I innocently asked.........

Only shooting at 50-75 yards is limiting the .357 Mag.  Mine will shoot around 1"-1 1/2" at 100 yards using a $30 Bushnell 3-9X.  That's using several different bullets, including a 250 gr Beartooth LRNFP.  

Of course, with a 125 gr .357 doing about 2100 fps or 125 gr .38 Specials at 1700+ fps, why wouldn't I look at longer ranges?  :roll:

Open sights are not an option.  I got the barrel and mounted it on my gun, and just as I expected, cant get my eye down to look thru the sights with the monte carlo stock.  I dont want to change a stock and barrel to shoot 357s.  Perhaps, I should have sent in the BC reciever for this barrel, but I dont want to mess with that gun.  

Im looking at banging offhand plinking with this barrel, I will use other equipment for longer bench shooting.  With multiple choices, every gun needs its nitch.  Thats also why the BC will only be a 45/70, because that is what it looks at home with.

Sometime down the road, probably well down the road, I may MAX this barrel.  It could serve as a first hunter for my kids, but that was why I bought the 243   :oops: , or at least thats how I justified the purchase.  I need to come up with a good story for my wife on why I got the 223 barrel now  :twisted:

Good excuse for the 223 is a trainer before they get to the 243. Less recoil but still some & longer range shooting than a 22lr. My excuse anyhow & it worked :grin:

that is perfect, we can use it for everything starting with a 22lr, to the mag rimfires, 204, 223, 243, 25bob, 6.5s, then to the 270, ..... all the way up to the final training for the 50bmg.

I need some fill in between the 30-06 and the 45/70.  That is just too big of a step for me, I may develop a flinch :eek:

I have heard these are excellent scopes for the money...and may be what your looking for...I have one of their Tacticle mil-dot illuminated ones...and just love it...Jon and Tammey are great people to buy from...and I don't think you can go wrong buying from them..

Well, my 357 is a 15" Max barrel on a Contender, use a 3X Burris. Eyes really getting bad, when I wear my glasses, I can't see worth a darn at dusk, so use a scope or Red Dot whenever I can....... :shock:

well guess what.  

to review, I have an original configured 243, with the monte carlso stock that I sent the recvr in for the new barrels, and a buff classic with the straight stock.  When I got the BC, I tried for grins trading the barrels between the 2 recievers, and neither fit well in the wrong one.  

Now, I tried my new 357 (fitted to the 243 receiver) in the BC receiver, and it fits well.  Locks up tight, opens nicely.


So, yesterday I gave it a try.  Shot the new 223, and then replaced barrels to the 357 in the factory fitted receiver, they both did well.  THen I mounted the 357 on my BC reciever, and no problems at all -locked well,opened, and ejected on command.

I have, for the near future, solved my sight/scope issue.  I am going to use the 357 with the open sights and the BC reciever stock.  I dont mind putting a different barrel on it, I just was not interested in trading stocks and barrels on a single receiver.  I know I would end up with stripped butt plate screws real soon doing that in addition to the un-handiness of the process.
