aa1680 doesnt work but the w296 does in the 445sm
« on: October 04, 2005, 12:01:12 PM »
i got my gun all sighted in and with that 3rd scope ring the scope doesnt move anymore.i shot many loads and boolits out of my contender loaded with aa1680 powder but i just havnt come up with any good accuracy with the powder.i then shot some ammo loaded with w296 and the accuracy is better all the way around.the best so far is a 33gr charge of w296 under a 240gr Remington JHP boolit.at 100yds i have shot several 3 shot groups under 2 inchs with this hand cannon.the gun hits you pritty good when you hit the switch but it not to bad.the TC loading manual says 33.2gr of 296 with a 240gr boolit= 2000fps with a 14inch barrel, not to bad at all i might say

ive been using cci large rifle primers with all loads so far.maybe the aa1680 needs a primer change of some kind?large rifle mag primer?what you guys using?

I'd try a heavier bullet first. 1680 is significanlty slower than 296 in the 44 bore. In my 44 Mag, there was at least a 170 fps difference, and I see little reason to think that would change. The 1680 needs extra bullet weight to help light the fire. I typically find that a heavier bullet will do more to help a powder that a primer. That doesn't meant a longer flame primer won't help, just that I've had more success getting a powder to act right by adding bullet weight.

I have'nt tried 33 grs. yet but I'm getting 2126 fps with 32.5 grs. of 296 with a 240 gr. bullet in my Handi. That load you're shooting should be some really bad deer and hog medicine. The 265 gr. Hornady's should shoot real well also.  Digger
