I recently added a .280rem barrel and a 7.62X39 barrel to my handi. I already had a .44mag.

Below shows the some preliminary range results. Note: Accuracy is from leaning across the hood of my pickup so there is a fair margin of error. Another very interesting observation was the performance of the milspec ammo from Russia (not wolf) but rather Industrial Enterprises. There were zero misfires and these rounds also showed the highest velocity. In contrast, I had to go through 4 rounds from a box of factory winchester PSPs before a got a round to fire. That's quite a contrast from other reports on this site. All other rounds in all calibers were handloads. All velocities where recorded at 12' infront of the muzzle.

Looks good, but I must ask, is the 44 Data inverted??? You are driving a heavier bullet to higher velocity with a heavier powder charge. But the big clue is that those are max loads of 296 and the velocity is identicle to the velocity I was getting with the same charges of H110 and those two bullets....except swap the 270 data you list with the 300 data. The 44 is a fun cartridge ain't it :grin:

On 2 occasions I have loaded 230gr swc's and 310gr wfn's with identical powder type and weight and had higher velocities with the 310gr.
I do not have my note book, but I believe it was with H110.
Using equal loads of IMR4227 had the opposite results, the 230 swc's were faster than the 310gr wfn.
My guess is it had to do with back pressure and burning rate. :?

The velocities for the .44 are correct. I cast the heavier bullet myself using a lee 310gr gc but with a bit harder alloy. The bullets actually weigh 292gr. They are max loads. The jacketed bullets aren't as "slippery" as a lead bullet going down the tube.

Wait!!!! That cannot be correct! According to the more knowlegable members of this board the domestic 7.62x39 will NEVER misfire.

No...I don't think that's correct...I think you can get misfires from just about any factory load if it doesn't fit your chamber properly...I had some 30-30 Winchester 150 grainers one time that gave about the same thing in a Ted Simmons Special...it was the wierdest thing...not to mention very frustrating...The darn thing would shoot cast bullets under MOA all the time...I glad it did it though...I traded it back in...and picked up my first Topper 30-30...and a custom Winchester mod 37A trap gun....both of which shot perfectly...

I think the cause of my winchester factory misfires in the handi is simply due to the extra hard primers used by winchester to prevent slam-firing in the SKS. These rounds fit the chamber fine. Since I plan on shooting mostly handloads anyway, I'm not too worried about it.

However, it is a bit frustrating that the handi is the only rifle chambered for this round that has problems with misfires. Ruger, CZ, Charles Daly all function flawlessly regardless of ammunition.

That's quite possible...I can say it's one barrel I don't plan on getting to try out...just don't have any use or need for one.

I hope you find a good load for it though... :toast:

Reynolds, Thats very interesting. The Lee 310 would not stabilize in my barrel, made the prettiest keyholes one's ever seen. That may have had something to do with my barrel being .432 I never tried the 310 after I found that out. The Hornady 300 XTP shot just fine however, and if yo invert the data you've posted, it is exactly as I was seeing with the Speer 270 Gold Dot and the 300 XTP...Go figure. I'm not sure I take the lead is more slippery than jacketed in every case. There is evidence that in 45 ACP, lead can run up pressures faster than jacketed and is not always as fast. Not argueing one side or another, just stuff that makes ya go Hmmmmmmm.....
