Help out a new single six owner
« on: October 17, 2005, 10:53:37 AM »
I just purchased my first Ruger single six, it's the 22lr/mag with a 6.5" barrel and adjustable sights. I did a trigger job on it and have the trigger pretty decent but I still can't hit a darn thing with it. I have never been a fan of sights and always have used scopes on my rifles and pistols (I had two beretta neos). Anyways, I have been getting pretty decent groups with my single six (even though they are way off from my pint of aim) but I can't figure out this dang sites. Is there a better set of sights a fellow can put on these that are easier to use. I had thought about scoping it but I hate to ruin the charm of this sweet little revolver.

Thanks

CZman

Step one is to keep shooting. I know it took me a while to get a "feel" for the single-action grip. I actually prefer a grip with less flare at the bottom, commonly called a "gunfighter" grip.

I like the stock sights, so I can't speak from experience regarding changes.

Two (non-scoped) options that come to my mind are a fiber optic front sight (such as Hi-Viz or Williams Fire Sight brands) or the One Ragged Hole rear sight blade. Basically, the ORH blade is like an aperture sight for your pistol.

I don't care much for the fiber optic sights, but one of these days I'm going to get around to buying the ORH sight blades and trying them...

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I plan to get some Hogue grips to make it feel better in my hands and I have even heard that it makes it easier to shoot more accurately with these. I wil also pick me up some of the ORH sights soon and see how they do - $25 is not a bad price at all for these at all.

Let me know where you find Hogue for the Single Six. I have looked all over and can't come up with any. Mine are Rosewood and too nice to mess up.

Here is the first place that popped up on my google search. I have seen them on ebay and several other places too. They even have them in my local sporting goods shop (McSports). Check them out. here

This link has several different models of them in rubber and different woods too.

Got my new Hogue grips on today and they feel really good, just what my hands needed. Now I can hold the pistol and have a place to put my pinky finger cause before there just wasn't enough grip there to make room for that finger. I hope it helps my aiming
Got them for $12 at my local gunshop...what a steal.

Shorts, Longs, & Long Rifles all work in the LR cilinder, also CB Caps. Clean well after use of anything shorter than the Lomg Rifles.

Your welcome. Man these new grips make wonders on this lil revolver. You really need to get a set of these. I almost sold this single six the other day cause I didn't enjoy the way it felt and shot. I now love it and prolly won't ever get rid of it. I don't really like the all black look of the black rubber grips on the blued gun so I will save up and get me some nice looking Hogue over-sized wood grips to dress it up a little.

Thanks. Got my Hogues today. My gunshop didn't have any in stock last week, so had to order them. Makes a big difference in how the gun feels.

I thought it made a HUGE difference too , best money I could have spent on it. Now my pinkie finger has a place to sit too :)
Have you done the "poor boys trigger job"? it didn't cost a dime, took all of 7-8 minutes and really helped it a bunch.
