G2 or Encore? what do you think?
« on: September 24, 2005, 01:46:50 PM »
I have decided that my next rifle will be a T/C, but I'm not sure which I should go with.  Here is what i am looking for in a rifle:

1.  Power and trajectory enough for deer/cougar/blackbear, and possibly elk to 300 yards.

2.  A gun that won't necessarily kick the snot out of my wife and/or kid when they take it hunting.

Right now I'm leaning toward the Encore in .243 to start (for deer/varmints only), but those JDJ wildcats from SSK look interesting for the G2, especially if any of them meet the above qualifications, and IF .225 Winchester brass is available for reloading.

I have about 4 months of saving before I buy, so any information you experienced T/C shooters have would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Mike

If you have shot a Contender and really, really like it, buy one.

If you are undecided and have never shot either, go with the more versatile Encore which has the weight to better control recoil and more calibers capable of taking elk.

Side by side, the Encore is noticably heavier but handles the felt recoil better.

Hope this helps.

azmike, for you needs a 308 or 7mm08 would fit your needs well, and won't kick the wife a lot.  :D

Recoil is easily managed with a limb-saver replacement recoil pad.

I can shoot my 308 all day long since I put that thing on.

I am leaning toward the Encore, and getting a few more barrels in addition to the 243 (I am sure that whatever I get, I'll end upbuying way more barrels than I'll need).

However, I am curious about the ballistics for the 6.5  and 7mm JDJ wildcats in particular, as SSK  chambers these for the Contender/G2.  Has anybody had experience with these rounds?  Are either of them viable deer/bear rounds at under 300 yards?  If I went the G2 route, I would just get a 45-70 barrel for elk, and limit my shots.

I have a new Contender G2 Carbine in 17 mach 2, .223 and 6.8 Rem. I am more than happy with it, but if I wanted to take 300 yard elk, I'd go with the Encore which has nearly an unlimited choice of high power options. The G2 is limited to about 35,000 psi rounds.

Got to check out a Contender and an Encore yesterday as I was buying ammo for my .35 Rem.   I am going with the Encore (should be ready to buy at Christmas), starting with the .243, with MANY barrels to follow I'm sure (I already have a list of them, including .223, .35 Remington, .280 Remington, .338-06, and .44 magnum.  The 243 will be for the missus and little one, the others for me  ).

Thanks to all for your input.

AZMike -- I'll second the good choice comment.

While I'll argue the merits of the Contender over an Encore in handgun form for most applications (even as a 22-25 cal centerfire carbine), however as far as rifle your rifle needs look, the Encore has it all over the Contender - go for it!

One thing to watch for is, there is no cure for the Encore addiction.  :D  :-D

I am looking forward to a long, unsuccessful rehabilitation.  I'm sure I'll end up with more than one TC.  I was originally going to get a Ruger #1 instead, but the interchangable barrels and lower price of the TC appeal to my frugal (my wife says stingy) side.

Just my opinion but go encore, I own both and my reason for saying encore is because you can get every barrel chambering offerd for the contender in encore barrels plus a bunch of encore only options in coustums that can't be used in contenders. besides a 243 in the encore is nice for my wife and daughter. bb75

I'm going to have to delay buying the Encore for about one extra month...was made an offer I couldn't refuse on a S&W pre model 10.  150 bucks, and it is a beauty.  Not 100 percent, but close enough for me.  Thanks for the advice and input.
