The rule of thumb is to subtract around 25 - 50 fps. for every inch of barrel.  Most velocity data is gathered using 24" - 26" barrels in the .375 H&H.  My two have 25" & 26" barrels.  Have you given any thought to the muzzle blast a short barreled .375 H&H is going to have?  I have experienced a 20" .308 Win. and it was extremely uncomfortable to the ears.  I wouldn’t even want to be around a short barreled .375 H&H even with hearing protection.  Lawdog

I would go for a longer barrel, but if you like the shorter barrels, go for it. One thing about the Encore barrels in .375H&H the barrel is 26 inches but is a shorter gun due to no action.  :D

There are a lot of 20" 375 H&H rifles here in alaska.  One of the local gunsmiths did a test with a 375 H&H, started with a 26" barrel and went down to 18.  He noticed very little difference between the 24-20" barrels  less than 50fps on average with 270gr factory loads.  Velosity loss drastically increased after 20".    I plan on having my stainless 375 H&H cut down to 21" and fluted to try to make it lighter and handier in the heavy cover.

We have a 26" Encore and it's really quite handy because of the relatively short action.  My own 375 is a bolt action with a 22" barrel and I really like it. One of the best features is the barrel-mounted sling swivel band. It makes the gun shorter when carrying it slung and it doesn't get hung up in brush. I wish more rifles had that feature. The flash from the 22" barrel is not bad at all and doesn't indicate that the barrel might be too short.

I figure that if the Alaskans are using barrels down to 20", there's probably a good reason for it. I'd take a look at what they're doing.

I've shot next to a number of short-barreled (19-20") .375s at the Anchorage range, and aside from the increase in blast they seemed to perform fine.   The flash was not too noticeable in daylight or overcast days.  The expansion ratio of the .375 does not lend itself to extreme loss of velocity as a barrel is shortened.  And really, is the loss of 100 fps by a magnum cartridge even noticeable by any American game?  Not in my experience.   :-)

Sppednut. I have an Encore 15" with a muzzle brake and I get 2350 form it with a 300gr Sierra and IMR4064. Recoil is managable and it is a hoot to shoot.  I'm not sure more velocity is needed inside of 200 yards..
The first shot is the best shot, it may be your only shot!  Do it with a single-shot.

I'm thinking of shortening my CZ 550 to 21" or 22" for use as a brush/dangerous game piece, and using a 28" prohunter barrel as a plains number.  I'd like to see how fast I could get some Barnes 210gr to go out of a 28".
