Lets talk scents??

I come from an enginneering back ground and like to test everything to see if it works or not. When I first started bass fishing really heavy into it I tried using scents. I started off buying a bunch of scents and right away I'm looking at prices?? I first used baitmate bass scent with great success($2.50 @ Walmart) its affordable and it is still one of my favorite. My second scent was a little mopre expensive YUM in shad and crawfish flavor($5 @ Walmart) and this stuff worked too. What I'm getting at the cheaper stuff works so why buy the $8 to $9 dollar stuff?? I have to say I'm frugal again if cheaper works stay with it using sometime is better than using nothing. Really all you want to do is cover your scent in the first place. I always wash my hands before going fishing to remove all odors that may get on my bait too. Fish can smell 50ppb thats real keen the slightest foul odor will turn them off. Some fisherman put scents on their hands too before handling their tackle it does make a difference for $2.50 you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!!!!!!                    BigBill

Back in the early '80's I was fishing a tournament on Ky. Lake and I drew out with a Pro from Tenn.  I had from time to time experimented with oil of anise combined with mineral oil but had never seen a commercially made product.  Anyway this day we were both struggling and not doing well when this guy comes out with a bottle of Fish Formula and squirts it on his plastic worm.  He explained he was field testing this product and had forgotten about having it.  I asked for a squirt and on the very next cast I nailed a 4 1/2 pounder and after that I was hooked.  I mean I ruined the carpet in a couple of bass boats by using so much.  I bought it in case lots!  This went on for three or four years until one day I drew out with a guy from Jackson Tenn.  We were both limited out in the first hour in a Redman tournament and were culling when I asked this guy if he wanted to try some of my Crawdad Formula and he laughed at me.  He took his worm and dipped it up and down in a can of Pennzoil outboard oil and proceeded to catch enough to win the tournament!  He told me later that he regretted doing that but just wanted to teach me: Size and color and smell matter, but it is how and where you use it that really counts!  :lol:

I have to add my tacklebox reeked of scents so i took it and washed it good and put my tackle back in it. I opened it lastnite and found it still smells just as bad if not stronger of scents I'm not sure if its a good thing or a bad one maybe my baits are "prescented" it could be my baits that smell.                                                     BigBill

Its a better smell than old nightcrawlers left in it!!!!

Back in the early 80's When Fish formula came out, one of my friends bought several bottles. Another of my fishing buddies went to Mann's Bait  Company(we live in Eufaula, and the factory is but 2 miles from his residence) and bought a huge bag of Electric Grape Augertail worms, which we split the cost and the worms.
I then went to the First friend's home and begged a few squirts of the Fish Formula to douse my worms.
The following day friend #2 and I hit the lake. I was catching fish at a rate of 10 to 1. It got to the point where he was getting P.O'd,due to his lack of success. I was laughing, and offered him one of my worms. He refused, and I kept on catching fish. At one point he said "If you get one more..." and before he could finish, I was reeling in another.  I again offered  to let him use my worms, but got the reply "Why? they all came out of the same bag."
After another hour of him being fishless and I catching and releasing about 10 more, he relented and took a worm from me. That's when discovered what I had done. I found out that day that the scents were something that worked.
Now I mostly use Crawdad formula on everything, as it seems to give better results.
