PMC +P .45-70 factory ammo performance
« on: January 14, 2006, 05:41:17 AM »
Anybody use this ammo on bigger/thicker skinned game, ie. elk, moose, bison, bear, etc.  How was the bullet performance?  Did the 350 gr. hornady penetrate, or flatten/come apart prematurely?

Mad Dog, Wow, no one else is repling to this one. I've got some PMC +P 350grs just waiting for a 400-450lb boar hog. I'll let you know how they do when I get him, I do fear that they will stay together and leave a pretty nasty exit wound.

Don't get too used to it unless you have a good source, PMC has discontinued production of this fine ammo.

I was not happy with that ammo I used on a black bear a while back. I was shooting a guide gun and I emptied that gun in the bear at close range. The first round hit the bear dead center in the chest as the animal was walking to me at about 40 feet. I was behind some brush neeling down and he couldn't see me. We were both on the ground so 40 ft was as close as I wanted him to get. From start to finish every time I fired he fell and then got up and ran. The first round did not penetrate into his chest cavity and only one round was found in his heart lung area that bullet went through the ribs, the lead core and jacket were not together. He went about 100 feet after the first shot and gave up.
I know people will say, at what part of the bears death did the bullet fail. Well in my opinion the PMC 350 gr. + P ammo, have to much expansion and to little penetration. The bear was a little under 6 feet squared and his live weight was about 275 lbs. give or take 20 lbs.
If I still used a 45/70 I would stick with heavy hardcast WFN bullets only!!!

I've always liked how the 405 gr. Rem. bullet preforms when pushed to 1800 fps -1900fps. seems to penatrate well.

Sorry haven't knocked down anything bigger than some good sized Whitetail deer.
If PMC dropped the load, won't get a chance to poke a cow elk with it this fall. WIll have to use Winchester Supreme or move up to Buffalo Bore.

Quickdtoo, think 45-70 shooters beg loud enough they would bring it back?
It was a nice affordable, modern load and my Marlin loved them.

Does anyone know what the true velocity is for the round out of a 1895GG?

I shot a 500 lb Black bear with the 350 grain Hornady RN. It went in the top of the head, down through the neck and was under the hide between the front leggs. Perfectly Mushroomed to about twice its size. It was a hand load though I never tried the PMC ammo.
shot placement is everything.
