first bow setup of any kind..need help recomendations...
« on: October 07, 2005, 03:27:08 PM »
ok...........i am brand spanking new to bow/crossbow hunting . im thinking of this Barnett quad 400 cross bow package at cabellas.. http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/horizontal-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat21424&id=0026205416260a&navCount=3&podId=0026205&parentId=cat20024&navAction=push&catalogCode=XF&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20024&hasJS=true

and using these broad heads G5 montec http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat21424&id=0004535415362a&navCount=6&podId=0004535&parentId=cat20059&navAction=push&catalogCode=QS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20059&hasJS=true

and the required 22 inch carbon arrows

my question is ......is this a decient quality bow that will be good to learn on as well as fairly durable for hunting?
also is my broad head choice a good one and what weight should i use for deer? . also what is the largest type of game i could expect to harvest with this setup if i pratice and do my part to aim correctly and at the correct place?
i have never owned any bow b4 and maybe shot a bow 10 times in my whole life ( im 44) and im thinking the crossbow with the scope will be a lot easier to learn over a compound bow .i used to be a pretty good shot with a rifle
also are their other accesories that i will need up front that arnt included? and what might i need/want down the road to improve my setup?
like i said im brand new and have nothing now and im not opposed to other recomendations for bows and equipment...these peices just seemed to be good value for the money and were ( to my knowledge ) from makers of quality equipment
thanks in advance for your input and suggestions...

ps..ill be using hay bales with paper targets for praticing

I like the simplicity of recurves and I I was buying a new xbow I would buy a Excaliber. I have just heard too much good stuff about them not too. I have a bottom of the line  Barnett ranger recurve and I am not knocking Barnett I like them but I think the Excaliber would be a better choice. I am sure a better trigger and they are very accurate.  Excaliber has a website www.excaliber.com and they have a forum and the guys there really know their crossbows they can answer your questions even if you still go with the Barnett.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.
