I'm Done!
« on: October 06, 2005, 09:22:51 AM »
Just to let you know i am out of the Handi business. i sold my Ultra 25-06 the other day and replaced it with a Ruger 77 in 270Win. just much more useful in the terrain I hunt on a regular basis. I now have 2 270's one a custom rig and I like the 270's and think I'll stick with the bolt guns. Enjoy your rifles they just don't seem to fit me well. in fact this may be my last post on graybeards.

i've got a Ruger M77 MkII in .270, all-weather.    What a rifle!

don't blame you for buying that Ruger.

I sold my Ruger M77 Mk II in .270 to finance buying my 44mag Handi AND my .270 Handi.

Guns are a personal thing ... each needs to find thier personal preference.

Yeah, he'll be back.  Either to handis or to 'step up to' T/Cs.   :D  To each his own.  I like and own them all, and consider even semi-autos rifle to be some of my 'hunters'.  Hard to argue with a Handi or other S.S. for hunting since it gives you a shorter overall length for the same or more bbl length.  But if it doesn't fit you though, it doesn't fit.  As for me, the stocks' LOP on Handis seems to fit me VERY well, so I love them.  I've got one real nice turnbolt that competes with my Handis as a hunter of choice, however, and that's a Howa 1500 with Boyd's JRS laminated stock and bedding job, in .25-'06.  Follow up shots, in the very rare instant they would be needed, are slightly faster than a S.S., but a S.S. can be very fast on the follow up too (2-3 seconds with practice).  I view a turnbolt or other repeater as more of an ammo storage device than actually being needed for follow up shots.  But that particular 'downside' to S.S. guns can easily be made up by a buttcuff with extra rounds, so I'm becoming more and more partial to S.S.'s.  One good reason I see perhaps for a turnbolt, levergun, or other repeater is in a BIG boomer like say a .338 win mag or .375 HH mag or .45-70 with category 2 loads - every bit of extra weight is helpful to avoid developing a flich, and easing up on the shoulder.

Gentlemen I am glad you know me so well. First and foremost I sold my Handi 25-06 because at 6'5' 220# the little rifle never felt right in my hands and I struggled to get it to group. I do think these are great guns and may pick up an Ultra Varmint fluted in 223 or 22-250 if it's made in that gun. It will be my Varmint gun eventually but for my big game hunting in New Mexico I'll stick to my bolt or pump guns. Like many of you I shoot and like many guns, but I am happy with a 270Win for the majority of my hunting regardless of rifle type. my Custom 721 will be finished in a couple of months and I will be a happy ole man. At 55 i know what i like and am set in my ways. That is as long as my wife says its ok!!! :)  Seriously though the Handi is a great rifle just not what I'm willing to carry in bear country where I hunt. For goats who knows a ultra 25 in the Choate stock may find it's way into my hands again only time will tell. It's also going to depend on how my knee replacements go in the spring 06. Who knows I may not be able to hunt after that. See ya later.

                                                     God Bless,
                                                      Jess

God Bless my comrades in Arms and may our Lord and Savior Jesus keep them safe!

I can't really understand why you would say this. The are several forums on this site to choose from.If you can't find a good place to chat here...I seriously doubt you can anywhere.

Good luck with your up-coming knee surgery...and also your new Rugers...

I like my Ruger 77 260, my Winchester 270 WSM and my Stevens 200's 7mm-08 and 25-06.........but something about Handi's I really love. Short overall length (they are heavy though, since most of mine are Bull barrels) and they get banged around in my truck and it doesn't bug me much. But if I scratch my Ruger 260 I would be upset for days. Get the Fluted Varmit Handi........they are really accurate and very satifactory to shoot.

I know what you mean about it being a small gun amd fit.  I'm 6'2" 220lbs myself, you've got 3" on me.  But a lot of my shooting is done with a heavy coat on so the shortness of the stock is just right for me.  On the bench during the summer I use a padded shirt or padded jacket to get that added length and to keep the scope off my nose.

I used to carry pumps, and lever guns, for fast follow up shots.  Then I started carrying bolt guns.  Then one day I realised that I seldom need a second shot, in fact in 45 years of hunting I have only needed a second shot twice.  I no longer feel I need to carry a repeater, a single shot is totally adiquate for me.  I also hunt in Grizzly Country, but I still carry nothing but single shots.  During the Spring, Summer, and Fall hunts I carry a single shot in .338(T/CR), or .35 Whelen(Handi).  During the Winter I carry a 30-06 Handi exclusively.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
