Who has had a barrel rebored or can recommend a gunsmith who can?

What kind of gun do you have that you would want rebored?

If you have some sort of special rifle that you wanted to save the barrel. for some special reason then you rebore. A barrel that had some special markings or features that needed preserved. An ordinary run of the mill barrel you just replace by rebarrelling.

Proper reboring for most rifles will cast as much and in some cases more that rebarreling. Reboring is also restrictive in calibers choice. You can't always go up to the calibar, because of demensional restrictions.

Most Gunsmiths can handle a rebarrel for you. You will have to find someone that specializes in reboring.

Cliff LaBounty just did a pre-WWII model 70 from 30-06 to 35 Whelen. I couldn't be happier. It shoots very well. Before all you pre-64 collectors start knashing your teeth and wailing about destroying a valuable collectible, you should know that it had been converted to left hand before I got it. I wanted to keep the original barrel. Someday I will have someone duplicate a Supergrade stock for me and I will have one of the only pre-64, left handed model 70 Supergrades in 35 Whelen. Till then I will just enjoy it the way it is. Mart

Just a couple of thoughts regarding reboring.

Generally, the cost of reboring runs about $265.00 which also includes the adjusted chamber for the new cartridge and re-crowning. A new barrel, threaded, chambered, crowned, etc. will run about $450.00 to $550.00 from a respected gunsmith using a quality barrel (not A&B) such as Lilja, Douglas, Shilen, Hart, Krieger, Pac-Nor and others. So ends the argument about price. This is all published information, I'm not making it up.

The restrictions about caliber change is true, consult your rebore expert. Bear in mind that the muzzle diameter enters into the decision also. Most want approximately 0.125" each side of the groove (0.250" total) for safety.

The folks that rebore will not guarantee the rebore because they did not make the original barrel and cannot be responsible for flaws in the original barrel. They will steer you away from reboring certain barrels because of past poor quality and experience. Some rebores actually shoot better than the originals but not all.

At last count I think that there are about 7 people that rebore and/or sleeve.
