hello, i just bouhgt a bd, never shot an inline before but have seen plenty shot...i have had a renegade since aprox 1988....killed lots of deer with it but i want something more accurate.....don (now retired) at tc told me my gun wouldnt shoot sabots well so all my renegade has seen it big maxi balls...maxi balls were easy to load even with a dirty barrel......now the question...should i shhot maxiballs.....240 gr sabots or 285 gr powerer belts......i do know that the sabots will be very hard to load sometimes......i think the powerebelts may be bettter to load........i do see on some of the post that the 240 gr sabots shoot well....thanks for any replies......mack

Mack, I have the precursur to the BD (System 1) and it won't shoot TC Maxi-Balls, Maxi-Hunters or Remington Maxi's at all. Sprays them all over the paper whether it be 25 or 50 yds and won't hit the paper at 100yds. Hornady 240 gr (green) and 300 gr sabots (black) are a different story altogether-wicked accurate. I was ready to give up on it till I tried the sabots, so I suggest try many and see if works; if no, keep trying till you find something that does. The Maxis were wicked easy to load while the sabots are more difficult, and I believe the bore may be a bit larger and thus my results. I may be incorrect here but whatever...good luck.

Went out last night with my BD for deer and shoot two Crows instead..am using TWO Triple 7 pellets and a hollow point Power-Belt. It is a .45 Cal. This is my first Inline after many side hammers and have tried everything, including round balls in a TC 12 GA Shotgun. Really like the Powerbelts and will stay with them,,load good even after many rounds have been fired with no cleaning. Clean and lube with only TC Bore Butter . Just got a Vara-Flame kit and will start using it as the 209 really mess up my action................Hal

Hey janehal, let me know if the VariFlame works. I called the manufacturer of VariFlame, and he told me that it would not work on a Black Diamond because of the type of face on the bolt. He suggested musket caps, but I am going to try the magnum #11 caps. I wouldnt mind trying it if it works. Keep us posted!

Loaded some Vara-flame with CCI Small Rifle primers and fired them with out a charge and they had no problems. I don't know why they would say there would be a problem as they are not much different than a 209. Have my gun broken down as I am doing some other mods to it and will try some actual loads this weekend. I am champhering (sp) the port were you load the primer as it seems two small and sharp to get your finger in to load....I don't like the plastic tool that they give to load the primers......

The Variflame is awsome!! I use it in my NEF Sidekick, much better than the way too hot 209 primers. I use the Small Pistol Primers, plenty hot. Jack.

I talked to the guy in Canada(veri flame) he is under the assumption that all Black Diamonds have a flat face to the bolt. When really the latter BD that was advertised to use 209's had a protrusion like a firing pin on the bolt face. I bought the system am I am about to try it out.
I am curious about the use of "Bore Butter" in the use with plastic sabots. Any input?

If you want to use musket caps, I recommend the RWS flangeless musket caps. They work awesome and can be waterproofed with a small piece of surgical tubing placed over the cap and knipple. They can be placed on the knipple with gloved fingers with no problems. :wink:
