Finally got some reloads made up and shot the new 500 S&W barrel. 400 gr. cast bullet over 35 gr. of H110, WLR primer, Starline brass. Just shot enough to get the scope on target, and one group of three. Group was about an inch at 50 yds. Noise was off the scale, recoil was stout, but manageable. I cannot imagine shooting one of these in a handgun. I believe that is more fun than I would ever want to have! Those big holes look impressive in a sheet of paper, I just hope they look as impressive in a deer.

I've got a load for the BC barrel you sent me that shoots into an inch at 50; I won't be doing any more load development with the 45-70; shooting it off the bench gets expensive with the subsequent chiropractic treatments.

Shooitng it offhand is lotsa fun and does not mess my back up at all.

It must be all the rimfire benchrest shooting I've done overe the last 3 years I'm too relaxed at the bench.

I'm hoping that the 30-30 will fit the BC/Target frame.

A couple of rounds from the thumper will definitley get you over that relaxed feeling. My shoulder feels like I shot 5 rounds of skeet with a 12 ga. Just tender, not really sore. But I know I've been shooting!

Daniel, what sort of velocity are you getting with the rifle barrel?
I was thinking that the extra 13" or so would give you an additional 300fps.
So that'd be around 2000fps, right?
Sounds like the 500 would be fairly cheap to reload too.
Using large rifle primers & 35gn of powder is about the same as a 303 Brit.
Are the cases and bullets pricey?

Sounds like two things are in order here... 1) a dead mule for the stock bolt hole and 2) a Limbsaver recoil pad :shock: putting these two items on your 500 will make it much more friendly to shoot :lol: :lol:

Reloading is the only way to go on this puppy. Bullets-$30 for 200 at a gun show. Primers-$18 per 1000. Powder-$18 per pound (should do about 200). Brass was on sale at Midway-$32 per hundred, and it should last quite a while. Lee carbide die set-$23 plus shipping from Midway. A bargain compared to $43 per box of 20 at the local shoot-em-up store. I've been spending all my money on new barrels and guns, so I don't have a chrony yet. Maybe Santa will be kind. No idea on velocity, but I was guessing maybe 1700-1800. Maybe someone could duplicate the load with a chrony and get some real world data.

Daniel, do you think you could take a pic of a 500S&W next to a .22LR & post it so I can get some idea of it's actual size?
Also, what does your H&R outfit look like?

Sorry, no digital camera. It is just a barrel that I had factory fitted on a regular SB-2 frame. The rifle has pallet wood stocks and I mounted an old Swift 3X9X40 scope I had in the parts bin. One thing I did do was to move the sling stud from under the forearm to the end of the schnable forearm. (Thanks Stan). It keeps it from being a knuckle rapper.
