Dancoman: There's 2 ways to lower your scope, both involve eye relief.
On heavy recoiling rifles I try to use long eye relief models {shotgun scopes}keeping the eye piece in front of the hammer. While on lower recoil firearms I move the scope back so the hammer is under the main body {1" tube part} of the scope. Point is that you must keep the bell of the scope from being right over the hammer. Hope This Helps:
