L'il Gun powder and the .45 colt.
« on: October 25, 2005, 09:39:31 PM »
Got a linc from here on L'il Gun and the .45 Colt.
Published loads are IMPRESSIVE.
I don't have any L'il Gun powder but I can cure that easily enough.
I'm using mostly tried and true 2400, under max by at least 1.5 grains under the Gold Dot Speer 250 grain boolit.
Recoil is stout but managable, accuarcy from limited testing (raining 3 days now) is promising at a best of 5 shots into 1.25 at 25 yards.
So why fool with it?
Well................because we is what we is!

So who has experience with L'il Gun in the .45 Colt
I'm not trolling for hot loads, I can read the manual, but experience, accuracy and such. Range reports reqeusted.
Oh, Bisley Balckhawk 7.5" is my 'got to' if I get to deer hunt this year.
Any thoughts on the Gold Dot.
This boolit is new to me.
Thanks fellers. :D

Ive used alot of lilgun in the .45s and it works great no experience with gold dots in the .45 but have used them in other calibers and they are a good jacketed bullet. I wont post any loads here as there in the books and every gun is a different animal when it comes to loads it likes. Im not trying to be a hardass here but im going to move this to the realoading fourm as this fourm is more of a discussion forum for guns then for loading.

Lloyd.
I wasn't asking for loads.
I've read you before.
I understand your rules.
I said I'm not looking for LOADS that I can read a manual.
The question wasn't about LOAD data, it was a request for a discussion about Lil'gun performance and accuracy in the SINGLE ACTION RUGER.
Must be a matter of perception, what?
This is the SINGLE ACTION forum ain't it?????????

Kinda thought people might want to discuss accuracy and boolits in the SINGLE ACTION RUGER.
Perhaps I shoulda been more specific huh?

Lil' Gun powder was designed specifically for use in the .410 shotgun. Powders in that burn rate range are generally also very useful in magnum revolver rounds as well as the .45 Colt and such large capacity cases.

Such is the case with Lil' Gun also. It works. But it has been my experience that while you can generally get as much or a slight bit more velocity from it with a wee bit less powder you can't match the accuracy of the old stand bys like W296/H110 or 2400. I've pretty much given up on it for that use and gone back to those three.

Ok help, I bought a lb of this powder at a sale. I have found little info on it other than a shot gun powder (410). I have shot trap and skeet long time, and Red Dot and Blue Dot are preferred loading powders. They also work in hand guns. So what say you, is this a hand gun powder? Is it only to be used in heavy cal 44+? I find very little info on there web site. A lot of loaders talk about Lil Gun but I find little published.

It's a pretty limited use powder. Good for .410 shotgun but no others and for use in .357, .41, .44 magnums and the .45 Colt as well as the truly bigger magnums like the .454 Casull and over. For use in more standard rounds I doubt you'll find data.

My policy is to never buy a powder until you're researched it and KNOW you have a use for it. If ya do then chances are good you're gonna be stuck with it.

sorry i you felt i stepped on your post. I guess i kind of used it as an example to kind of sway the discussions from heavy hunting loads to the guns themselves. I guess in my opinion theres a reloading fourm allready here and thats where most of the loading questions should go. I just see to many guys just starting out loading that want heavy loads to hunt with. I was one of them myself until i found out that the animals didnt know the differnce.Id be more then happy to help anyone with loading data over the pm system or email but to post specific loads especialy 45 colt loads is a risky deal to me on here. Just to many people that figure if i give them a load thats safe why not bumb it up a tad. Ive got loads with lil gun that will definately put hair on your chest in large framed ruger but i hesitate to give them to someone i personaly dont know is a responsible handloader. You have to keep in mind that alot of people on here are just starting with handguns and loading and shouldnt be experimenting. Those large framed rugers are bull strong but not infalable ive personaly shot them loose. I hoped the experinced handloaders would understand my stand on this and I guess as long as Greaybeard doesnt take my access to the control buttons away thats the way it will be. I guess my opinion is that the anti gunners have enough ammo without hearing of crazy handguns gernadeing there guns. Again im sorry if i stepped on your toes it was surely nothing personal.

My first .45 Colt Bisley was one of the stock 7.5" blued guns. I bought it expressly to push heavy bullets fast. Now understand I'm really NOT a single action kinda guy. But I'd heard so many folks who are praise the Bisley grip and state that it's the way to go for heavy loads. Actually I'm convinced a double action is but I decided to try.

Using my Lyman 452651 (I hope that's the right number as it's off the top of my head) bullets weighting 318 grains of the 325 the bullet would weight with #2 alloy I had to back off when I reached 1250 fps as I was having a hard time keeping the gun in my hands. I use a very light grip on handguns, something I learned in all my years of shooting double actions. With single action guns rolling in my hand the light grip brings blood frofm the hammer often.

I backed off the loads to about 1100 fps and found that relatively comfortable and it's more than enough for any game I'd ever be using it on. With the newer 5.5" SS Accusport Bisley I still find that level of power about all I want in this gun.
