Stingray Disassembly
« on: October 15, 2005, 07:04:04 AM »
Guys, I need some help. I am trying to change the spring on my Stingray.
I followed all instructions on disassembly from the manual. I have removed the trigger assembly, now it says compress the spring and remove the end cap pin. Well my end cap pin will remove now without compressing the mainspring and does not seem to be holding the end cap on at all. Any suggestions?
Thanks RDS

First, make sure the pin is in. On the top of the gun, right above the trigger, is a small hole with a set screw in it. That screw is the trigger adjustment. Its probably turned out too far and is holding the cap in place. Find the right size allen key and turn the screw down inside so it dosen't hit the tube.
Its also possible that the spring is either compressed or collapsed inside the piston. If it has failed and either broken or collapsed it won't push the cap out in any case. Will the cap come off if you take out the pin?

What spring are you putting in it? The smaller Vulcan-based actions like the Stingray and Xocet don't really respond well to more powerful springs. They are at about their limit as they come, and more spring just overpowers the seal and makes firing cycle harsh. A little less spring makes the gun shoot better in most cases.

HI Dave, I took the trigger screw out of the top. The spring has not failed, I am replacing it with a Maccari spring in hopes of smoothing it out. It almost looks like the end cap screws on. it has serrations around it.
Thanks, RDS

Dave, final got the end plug out, I had to hammer it out with a nylon punch. It never did seem to be under any spring tension. I see why I was getting vibration, there was no lube on anything. Thanks for your input.

Geez, the cap should come out freely. Never seen one fit that tight.
Did you get the whole kit or just the spring? I have the JM spring/guide assembly and the red Hornet piston seal he used to carry in my Webley. You may find the power will be slightly less if you are using the Paladin spring. However, accuracy and consistency are much improved.

Dave, When I put it back together I didn't use the spring compressor, I just taped the cap back on with a plastic mallet. I got the kit. The gun is shooting about 7-10 fps slower (no big deal) but the gun is much less hold sensitive. I also improved the trigger while I hade it apart. I am very pleased with the way it shoots now. RDS
