7mm-08 vs .308
« on: October 07, 2005, 07:49:15 PM »
What are the major differences in these two calibers.  My first deer gun was a 30-30, then I went to a .308 and killed aton of deer with it.  This year I have went to a 7mm-08 hope to have the same success.

I can tell you I had the same problem.  Knew nothing but what I read about the 7-08.  Well, just walked in the door from a day and a half doe/hog hunt.  Dropped a doe Friday morn at 72 yards in her tracks with a neck shot.  That afternoon, put the range finder on another, ranged it at 175, held dead on behind the shoulder and she was DRT, dropped straight down and didn't move.  Had a small entrance wound and the exit was about the size of 50 cent piece.  shooting handloads, 41 grains of Varget with 139 Hornady SST.

Shot a small hog Thursday evening and she also dropped straight down.  I'm sold......

Ford vs Chevy---the never resolved question! Are you a 30 caliber guy or a 7mm guy? ( or even a 6.5mm guy!!!!)  A dead deer is just  dead no matter the bullet caliber! :)  :-   :) pg

They are very similar cases.  .243, 7mm-08, and .308.  From base to begining of shoulder on all three is 1.560".  All three have 20 degree shoulder.  Case length is 2.045", 2.035, and 2.015 respectively.  Longer neck for the longer, smaller diameter, bullets.  You can make brass for your gun using one of the others, but they can take some work.  With so much brass out there, not always worth it.

If you happen to come into some match .308 brass, you can make some nice 7-08 and/or .243 brass with it, but you have to size the neck to make a false shoulder, fireform with light load, then neck turn to match your chamber and trim all to length.  Easier to get some Norma brass and start fresh.

The .308 and 7mm were in serious debate with a few friends of mine.  The final conclusion was both groups went to the range to prove their own caliber.  Neither side was happy with the results.   Both calibers performed excellent in accuracy/penetration tests, and 7 out of 10 guys reloaded.  The only major difference was availability of brass for the 7mm.
