« on: October 06, 2005, 04:19:29 AM »
Wanted to let you all know there is an story in the November issue of Shooting Times magazine on modernizing the 30-30 Win.
It gives a number of loads for spitzer bullets.
Layne Simpson, the author, favorite deer hunting load for the G2 Contender with 23 inch barrel was H4895, Federal 210M primer, Winchester cases, and Hornady 150 grain SST bullets.
He says it delivers sub four inch accuracy at 300 yards in the G2 rifle.
He also did a load with the Hornady 110 grain V-max and Reloder 7.
He reached velocities of 2844 fps with 100 yard accuracy of 1.31 inches from an average of three five shot groups.

Thanks for the info.

From what you report, it would appear that the old cartridge continues to evolve.

If you do a google search for 30-30 100 years and going strong, you will find a huge long article about a slew of factory ammo tests in 3 or 4 different guns and one of them was a handi rifle in 30-30....very neat article and very good info on what factory ammo worked and how well ...at least in the particular handi rifle they were shooting anyway.....

Thanks.  That is a great article.  Thanks for the link, Tim.  I have been wondering what my next Handi should be.  I have tossed around the idea of a 22Hornet, but I think it will have to be a 30-30.

iiiwew:  After seeing your post, I purchased the November issue of Shooting Times specifically for that article.  It's great.  Thanks for the heads up! :D   I had been pondering several other cartridges (.270, .308, 30-06, and 7mm-8), but now my next Handi may be the 30-30.

Andrew:  Thanks for the tip on 30-30 100 Years and Going Strong.  It's also a great article with useful info. :D
