problem with 17v
« on: October 10, 2005, 05:16:36 AM »
Hey guys, ol redhead here, usually lurk around over on the handi forum but I've got a problem maybe you can help me with. My nephew (now my  favorite nephew) gave me a 17v for my birthday. He said it was used but had only a few shots fired thru it. It does look very new, barrel slightly dirty, no wear marks except at the safty and it is very difficult to move from safe to fire and back. Maybe this could be fixed by bending the safty lever away from the reciever but that's not my biggest problem. When the bolt is closed there is a gap between the bolt face and the breech end of the barrel! This is not normal is it?  Is the barrel on a 17v threaded or pinned?  I'm kinda spooky about firing this thing untill someone pats me on the back and says it's ok or send it back to Marlin to get it checked. Serial is 98688xxx if anyone has mfg dates. Please give me some input, this little rifle feels so good I'm dyin to burn some powder.  Thanks   olredhead

chamber a cartridge in it and see if you can see the brass or if youre just seeing just darkness between the bolt and barrel.

i dunno what to tell you...odd thing. but youre right, if you think there is a problem, its not worth losing an eye over finding out the hard way.

Yeh Matt I've thought about lockin it down in my bench vice, putting a blanket over the action and firing with a string just to see if I'm getting any bulging on the brass. Still think I'd better plan on contacting Marlin.  Thanks olredhead

i looked at one in the gunshop today and thought to look for you.

if you are talking about the top of the bolt when its closed, that it looks like there is a tiny gap there...that gun had it. so does mine.

so it kinda depends where the gap on yours is.

Thanks for the effort Matt, I got brave last nite. Wrapped a sheet of lite colored heavy paper around the receiver ( to check for powder marks or anything else )  covered the receiver with a folded towel and fired a round.
No bulged case, no powder marks, everything appears normal. Thinking maybe on this model the case head fills the gap instead of having a recess in the bolt. Does that make sense? Guess I'm getting a little more cautious at my advanced age. Will try a few more rounds and if all appears normal  gonna mount a scope and see how she shoots.      olredhead

i think youre seeing what i saw and what you just said makes sense. i think theyre supposed to have that tiny little gap...maybe for gases if something should rupture?

well i'm gonna quit worrying about it for now. started honing trigger parts last nite and trying to find the right springs to lighten this doggone heavy pull.
gotta find some rings this weekend then we'll see how she shoots.
  thanks matt

Is this the old trigger system or the new one. The old ones used a papermate spring.

It's the old one,I used a pen spring for the trigger and replaced the sear spring with one from a tire valve stem. Weight seems about right but have a lot of travel. Gonna ( very carefully) remove some metal from the trigger to shorten the creep or length of travel. Not too much for now as I'm just working on the bench and what feels right in the middle of the nite sometimes
dosen't work so well when actully pulling the trigger on a live round on the range. Thanks for the interest and I'll keep you posted.
