Winchester 125gr JSP for Whitetails
« on: October 16, 2005, 06:10:48 AM »
.357 Magnum Hunters, I found some Winchester 125gr Jacketed Soft Points with a MV of 1370 FPS from a 6" revolver, 521 FPE. How in your opinions would they do on Whitetails, compared to a 158gr JHP at 1150 FPS? Max Effective Range?  I know with the rifle barrel, velocity should increase 300-400 FPS. I dont have time to reload right now, and the 125's fit my budget. Thanks!

I've taken a couple whitetail with 125gr JHPs pumped out over 1800fps (muzzle) from my 8" Colt Python.

I'm not sure what max range would be, but at about 25-30yards the heart and lungs were pretty much liquified.  Slug completely fragmented, the jacketing was peeled back and in one piece, but at the diameter of a quarter or 50 cent piece.

A JSP slug may not have as much devestation of the internals, giving better penetration then my JHP's..  Just an off hand guess, but I'd personally would limit my shots to 40 yards with your given specs.   ...but each to their own abilities and luck.
