powders for 30-30?

what are some good powders for this caliber?can you make them any better or more accurate than plain old remington corlocs?thanks. sj

I like H4895 in my 30/30.Other good ones are IMR 3031,Win 748,but factory 30/30 ammo is pretty darn good and hard to improve on,IMO,but I still load for it anyway :wink:

I use IMR 3031 and have had good success with it, like all reloading you can use different bullet weights and types.   :D

I have loads with Reloader 7 and some with 748.

Several of my guns like the Remingtion 170 HP ammo, if you can find it.  When I find it, I pick up several boxes.

I haven't tried it yet, but Varget is listed for 30/30 in this Hodgdon pamphlet that I have.  It has been very consistent for me in 308 and 7-08.  I am going to try some H4895 next weekend.

Varget works very well, both with cast and jacketed bullets.

My favorite is WW748 and a 170 gr Hornady. I think it is 32 or 33 grns. (PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK)
 I also load IMR4895 behind a Sierra 125HP for a friends young son. They like the load, I borrowed the gun and worked up the load for them. The gun was only shot at 50 yards, but put all the bullets thru one hole off a rest.

It has worked very well and shoots the best in my guns.

 I tried some of the AA powders, 2230 and 2460 but did not like them in the 30-30.

I've tried a lot of different powders and hands down IMR3031® has always been the best for me. My load of choice to do it all is:

Winchester® Case
Winchester® LR Primer
30.0gr IMR3031®
170gr Hornady® Flat Point

I like using IMR3031, but I have also used RE7 in the past. I always loaded 150 grain bullets before. I would load winchester PowerPoints for hunting and home cast gas checked lead to the same velocity for practice. Now I am thinking about going to 170 grainers and I wonder if 3031 is still a good choice. I'm looking to go just slightly under factory velocity. The 30-30 has become more powerful over the years, and I would be very happy with about 2000fps with a 170 grain bullet.

Unfortunately Winchester doesn't sell 170 grain PowerPoints for reloading, so I might have to go with the Sierra 170s. They have the scoring in the jacket like a powerpoint, so they are probably pretty close in performance I would guess. I'm going to get a box later on this month and give them a try.

H4895 and WW748 for myself and W748 for my hunting buddy.  I've tried Varget as well but didn't get the velocity I was looking for.

I am using 33g [I think], of IMR 4064 and a Sierra 170g Fp. One hole group at 50 yards, and a velosity of 2160 fps. I like the 150g bullets better for deer hunting, but my rifle will not shoot them as well.

I've had excellent results using AA2520 with Nosler 170 bullets in Marlins with the micro groove barrel. Work up to the max of 31.5grs.

I have been using  31.5 grains of IMR 4064 with 150gr Sierra flat nose and 30.5 grains of IMR 3031 with the same 150's The gun was sighted in at 100 yards  and I didn't have to change the sights at all.  I was also using 125 grain Sierra hollow points [I loaded them for my daughter] and found them to be very accurate. I was always lead to belive that the 150's were the optimum bullet for the 30/30 but the 125's groups were just as good.
