My old 760 has had Weaver Mount for close to fifty years.  It has had a few scopes over the years.  I have had very good service from a 3x9  Busnell Banner.  Low price but it does a good job.

I have the weaver one piece base on mine that Dad put on it when he had it.  Simple but has worked just fine so I won't change it.  As far as scopes go, there are alot of variables involved in  making that decision. The environment you hunt, how much weight you're willing to deal with, size of ojective, eye relief,  and of course the allmighty dollar come into play.  I have a Leupold VariX-III 2.5-8X36mm on mine but in reality could be happy with a good quality 2-7X or even a straight 4X.  Figure out how much you're willing to spend and then go with features that appeal to you.  I have a Nikon Monarch 3-9X40MM on my 243 that I absolutely love.  Plenty ample eye relief at 3.5", gathers light really well, clear, bright, and the duplex style reticle is perfect size for me.  On the above mentioned Leupold, it's standard duples is on the thin side for my tastes.  John at www.theopticzone.com posts here and you may pm him for advice and possibly purchase of a scope.  Best of luck to you.

I'd get a scope with at least 3.3" of eye relief. You didn't say how much money you can spend or what type of terrain you hunt. A Nikon Buckmaster 4x would be a good all around scope. Magnification over 6x makes off hand shooting more difficult for most folks due to showing you more wobble as you aim the rifle. I have a Leupold 1x4 on my 7600 and if I had to do it over I would have bought a fixed 4x. A Weaver base is a good choice on a 760 and Burris Zee rings are solid but light. I have Talley one piece rings that are very light and the base is part of the lower half of the rings. They are inexpensive too. Mount your scope as low as you can for best shooting in the field.

In 1977 I bought a Bushnell Sportview 3x9 for $50. I used it several seasons. After a couple of years it fogged if I was out in the rain. It held zero well. In dim but legal light it went black if turned up above 6x. You can still buy 3x9 scopes for about $50. How good are cheap scopes? You get what you pay for. If you get one I suggest a fixed 4x since there is less to go wrong with it and they are brighter since they have less lens. As for Simmons low end scopes, I had one .22 scope and it went in the trash because I couldn't focus it.

I would stay away from low price store brand scopes.  Years ago my father-in-law purchased a Monkey Wards scope for himself and my son.  I ended up tossing both in the garbage.  http://theopticzone.com/searchresult.aspx?CategoryID=38  Check out this link.  While not the top of the heap the Banner has provided dependable service.   The bottom line is that you are not going to get a $999.99 scope for $39.99.

Probably the best track record for inexpensive scopes that are durable and receive high marks is the Weaver K series.  I'd look at a Weaver K4 (4X38) scope.  A fixed 4x and 38mm objective has to gather light well and those K series have been around for a while.  I think you can pick one up for $100ish (less if you get a used one).

I don't  know what your local walmart carries as their stock varies by location at times.  Since you obviously have internet access, here's a few places to look:

www.theopticzone.com

www.gunbroker.com

The second site is an auction site and you can buy new or used scopes.  Go to gunshows if that's an option as well.  Look at different places on the internet forum's classified sections as well.  You never know what you might find.  I understand (believe me) about not being able to buy a high end scope.   I also am a firm believer that in most cases, the plastic bubbled packaged walmart scopes will leave you wishing you'd got something else.  Figure out how much you're willing to spend and go from there.  $100 still can get a good serviceble new or used scope, especially if it's a fixed 4 or 6X.  Keep us posted and best wishes.

Fixed 4 power scope.  Fixed scopes normally have less to go wrong with them vs. Variables.  Less expensive to boot.

Weaver rings and bases.

On a Remington 760 this combination has been around for years killing lots of deer and bigger.

This older 760 wears a Simmons AETEC 2.8X - 10X scope. Two piece mounts by Millett.

Simply the BEST scope I've ever owned.  Its is very bright, clear, and tough enough to withstand Dakota blizzard conditions.  I also have a discont'd 2X - 7X Simmons 44MAG scope with same mounts on my other 760.  Equally well built scope yet I paid less than $125. through an ebay source.

Consider a 2x - 7x variable. Nikon offers a nice 2x-7x-32mm for $129 plus shpg though Cablea's. Not cheap and not high end. It's pleanty both for deer and elk. I have a Redfield 3x-9x widefield on my '06/760 and a Redfield 1.75x-5x widefield on my .300 Sav./760. Should you ever want to seel your rifle let me know, I've been looking for a 760 in .308 for awhile. Since you're trying to keep the cost down I'd go with Weaver rings/bases.

Good luck....NYHunter

If price is your objective ( what isn't in this time of $3.15 Reg. gas) check for a used scope.

Three of my gun stores in this area normally have three of four used scopes on the counter.

It's hit or miss as to what is available but is an option for you.
