The african rifle

This weekend I bought an interarms whitworth 375 H&H  it came with a leupold fixed 4x33 scope but no sights. I have not owned it long enough to ensure reliability but I do beleive it is a mauser 98 action. I think that is a quality action, or at least a good starting point. What do you think, mainly for plains game, I can't afford the big 5.
Tell me what you think of the rifle design and just using a scope with no open sights.
Thanks 45north

There must several dozen posts on this forum regarding the 375HH. It's the best all around cartridge for internationl hunting ever produced. I would personally take it to a well respected gn smith and have him go over the feed and function, along with professional bedding and crown the barrel. Then maybe add some sights and install QD rings for the scope. That way you have instant backup if the scope dies on you. If you choose Warne QD rings you can also buy an Ashley Outdoors peep sight that will slide on the warne rear base and give you a very precise peep sight as a backup.

At least these are the things I have done with mine. My peep sight is deadly accurate to 100 yards too. After that just shoot the hack out of it. I would very strongly recommend the use of Hornady 270 grain bullets for all your shooting practice, then switch to 270 Swift A frames for your hunting. I have seen the 270 just plain clobber every plains species and several brown bears. I would not use the 300's unless really big stuff was on the menu like buffalo, And bigger. After seeing a a few dozen Brownies shot with the 270's I would not pick the 300 grain bullets for them either. That 270 Aframe driven to 2800fps is the ultimate hunting bullet from a 375HH.
