Rossi Matched Set - Youth, anyone bought this?
« on: June 16, 2006, 02:08:59 AM »
I'm new here, but have watched these boards for a couple years with interest in NEF guns, as I own one.

I'm looking for a good all around combo set up for my daughter.  I've bounced back and forth on many guns.  One thing that I've come across is the matched set (3 barrel combo) from Rossi/Braztech.  It comes with their miniloader (.50 cal.), 20 ga., and 22 lr.  Seems line an impressive and versital package for a good price.

I'm from Indiana, so rifle barrels are of no real use for hunting.  I'd be looking at the muzzleloader (in a light load) for deer, the 20 ga for small game, and the .22 for plinking.  I think the combo would be an all around good set up for her for many years.

I can't seem to find anyone locally who wants to try and get this for me, but I did find a couple on-line sources that offer the package at very reasonable prices (one for just under $200).  I'd have to have it sent to my local gun shop, but that is no big deal.

So, my question is, does anyone have this package?  Any thoughts on it?  I've got an NEF for myself and have been very impressed with it.  The Rossi is a similar gun and looks to be along the same quality lines.

Any input would be GREATLY appricated.

Welcome to Graybeards dec.
I personally don't own the package in which you speak, but know of some that have bought them and they seem reasonably happy with them. Considering what they are and what they aren't of course. And the price is very nice too, not to mention the versitility of the pack.
The Rossi's are very simuliar to the NEF's, though perhaps a little more rough around the edges. They still can shoot.
$200 for that combo is a pretty good deal. Walmart also carries Rossi Combos, but I couldn't find the exact one you are looking for at their website I did find this one:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3138546
Still you have found a better deal than that.
Good shoot'n to ya.

The one deal I found for under $200 did not pan out.  They had it listed wrong.  HOWEVER, I did get the .50/.22/20 youth combo from Cabela's in Dundee for $219.  The are not that far of a drive and I had to go that direction anyway in a week or so, so picking up the gun when it comes in is no big deal.

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on this combo.  When I do and have had some time to play with it, I'll post up some pictures and give my thoughts on it for others to read.

I got a 45 cal. youth for my wife.  Load the ML up light or it will kick the everliving snot out of you.  They are good shooters though.

I walked into a local Dick's Sporting goods for something else and they had a .22 /12ga combo for $95.99 to clearance them out. Of course for that price I bought it. Still in the box 1 year later, only taken out once to admire/fondle. Maybe a car set maybe a trading item?

Well, I picked up the "Triple Play" combo as Rossi calls it, last night from Cabela's in Dundee.  It was late when I got home, so all I got to do was get all the pieces out and wipe off the majority of the thick packing goo that they put on these things.  My initial feeling is that I am very impressed with this youth package.  I got the .50/.22/20 combo.  The wood is very nice and it all seems to be built very sound.  The safety does have a kind of cheap feel to it, but the mechanics seem sound.  I was very impressed with the muzzleloader set up.  Fiber optic sights, good looking ram rod, drilled and tapped for scope mount (the scope mounting bar is included).  The 20 ga. barrel is simply that, a smooth bore 20 w/ modified choke (non removable).  Pretty simple, but ample for bunnies and other small game.  The .22 barrel is nice, though the sight on the barrel is pretty bare bones (not bad, just no frills).  My only real complaint is the trigger is HEAVY, but I think I can do a little home trigger job on it and lighten it up (not too much though).

I'm going to lap the muzzleloader barrel tonight and finish cleaning up all the packing goo.  I'm hoping to get the gun to the range in the next week or so and start playing with it.

I did find that the owner's manual contradicted itself a lot in regards to the muzzleloader loads.  They first say up to a 150 gr. load (crazy for a youth gun), then they say a 100 gr. load, then they say a 50 gr. load (max).  I'm going to get in contact with Rossi about this.  I plan on starting out around 50 to 60 gr of pyrodex or 777.  I also picked up some of 195 gr. sabotted rounds to play with.  I'm going to try and get her a deer killing round that is good in the 40 yard or closer range, but does not kick the snott out of her shoulder.

I'll post up some pictures soon and give more of my thoughts on this combo once I've had a chance to play with it some more.  So far, though, I'm thinking I made a good choice.

Here is a photo of the set after I got it cleaned up.  I lapped the muzzleloader bore and got it to shine like a mirror.  I've not had a chance to shoot the combo.  Hopefully I'll make it out this weekend to play with it a little.

The more I tinkered with the set, the more I was impressed with it.  There is a lot of gun here for the money.

Dec,

Thats funny my wife's 45 has a really good factory trigger on it.  Not perfect, but it didn't need any work.

I think 50-60 grains of powder and 195 grain bullet would be a PERFECT start.  Honestly about 80 grains and a 200 grain bullet will probably be max on that gun for a kid, depending on how big your kid is of course.

As for the manual and charges.  I don't know how yours reads, BUT mine does state 100 grains of powder max and 50 grains is the reccommended starting load for YOUTHS.  Probably due to the recoil.

Please keep us updated on how it shoots.  I found my wife's 45 to be very picky on projectiles.

Bought one for my 8 yr. old son a few weeks ago.  He loves it.  He actually prefers to shot the .410 barrel.  We did have some mis-fires out of the .22 barrel though - I need to check into that.  Has anyone else had that problem?

Got the .50cal/20 ga matched pair for my 12 year old. All I can say is it is SWEET at the price.
Used and abused both all fall with absolutley no problems. I'm thinking about getting a matched pair for myself now.

BTW, 100 gr of pyrodex in the .50 cal hardly kicked more than the 20 ga. I would say any decent sized youngster can shoot it.

Nice lil' set. I got my 8 yr. old son the .22/.410 for Christmas, it seems quite nice for the price ($90)... I look forward to taking it out w/ him, He wants to go get some tree rats  ;D.

sami, if your using brick remington or federal ammo w/ that .22, finding a dud or two in the box isn't unusual... It's probably not the gun.

My son in law just got the .22/.410 combo for his 7 year old daughter. Dicks Sporting Goods has them for $99. this week, including the padded case. Will probably put a small scope on it. Looks great for the $$ spent.

I was wondering about these rifles too.

I liked the idea of the 20ga, .22lr, & .243 combo, but would have rather had a .223 instead of the .243

Can you get different barrels for them later like the NEF Handi-Rifles?

I got my daughter (age 7) a .22/.410 combo in stainless last Christmas and put a cheap BSA red dot on the .22 barrel.  For the price I don't think this outfit can be beat as a starter outfit for a youngster.

I wouldn't mind having a .22/20/223 combo myself.

hrminer, there's a link on their website for a barrel fitting program, but last time I checked they still weren't available yet. Looks you'll be able to get new barrels from them sometime in the near future.

Ugh, I hadn't been checkin' for that long.. didn't know...

Still, while I'll not be holding by breath... I hope that the links continued existence means that they're still working on this and getting closer all the time.

Not sure about that either. They don't seem to keep their web site very up to date. They are still advertising their 2006 Catalog on it and the free 1 year NRA membership offer with the purchase of any youth rifle has a Jan.31,2005 expiration date on it.  :(

We've had the .22/20g combo for several years; good starter set for a kid, but, 20g recoil can thump you.

The Rossi looks to be the same or very similar to the Handi-rifle, anybody know if the barrels are interchangeable? I'd like to get the m/l barrel myself.

If you mean are the barrels interchangeable between the Rossis and the H&Rs the answer is no.
