.308 is considered the more accurate cartridge, but I think you won't notice the difference until you get into benchrest target guns. In a H&R, the ultra comp barrels seem pretty accurate, but they are out of 30-06, although they might still have a few 270win.
I just got a barrel order from H&R, I ended up going with the .308 because I could get it in a bull barrel. I might end up making a 30-06AI out of it. (or maybe even a 30-280AI, as I already have a 280 ackley improved reamer)

boy did you open a can of worms.

i have done a ton of shooting with both , now all the match shooters (and me too) will tell the 308 it the accuracy winner but the difference in accuracy will never be seen in a factory gun. but in a handi i don't know

i have one handi in 30-06 (plain jane handi) and one in a 308 (also plain jane handi barrel) now i've not done a lot of work (well not like i have with my 308) but my 308 will out shoot my 30-06 but my 30-06 is no slouch either.

all i know is in the time i've been here (H&R talk member here) i've heard of a few bad grouping 06's but only one bad 308 but i ended up buying it and it is quite a good shooter now.

All of our little Handi's..can be made to shoot good..it's just taking the time, effort.and money to do it..

sureshot2040...either one will work well for you..both are very good cartridges....

Chocolate or vanilla.  You can’t go wrong with either.  I have the Handi in 308 with bull barrel and am in the process of walking the bullets into the bull.  Only advantage I can see to the 308 is I can get the same velocity with a 150 g bullet by using a little less powder.  I can kill paper and the occasional deer a little cheaper.  On the other hand I pick up a lot more 06 brass at the shooting range.

Depends on where you are hunting, and what you are hunting.  If you hunt on the Eastern states, either one.  If you hunt out West, the 06 can shoot the heavier 180 gr bullets better than the .308.  In the event you might come to Alaska, deffinately the 30-06.  The .308 will not shoot the 200 & 220 gr bullets well, the 30-06 will.  Although the optimal hunting bullet for the 06 is the 180 gr.  This Moose season we had a visiting hunter come up from Virginia, he was carrying a .308.  He put three shots into the heart lung area.  The Moose still ran two hundred yards before dropping.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
