I like the .458 win because it is less fussy for me to deal with, and what a whollup!  ;-)  But it is very flexible in the range of possible loads, from .45-70 ranges up.  Its only detraction is something that most big-bores could complain about -- not exactly flat trajectory.

I have a .45-70 in a Rem Hepburn, with a Badger barrel, decent target sights, set up for BPCR target (except that it is a single-stage trigger).  Shoots like a dream -- but I have to have a good day to cast the bullets.  I have found it precious hard to get the time at a time when the weather complies :-(

I am a 45-70 nut. :-D  I love my Shiloh Sharps and Ruger #1 in 45-70. I have had over 10,  45-70's.

I have one 45/70 and it is a handgun but I like the 458 Lott.

I really like my 45/70 NEF loaded to the MAX (Ruger/Level3 loads), but given the choice between it and my CZ550 Safari Magnum in 458 Lott, I'd take the 458 Lott every time !
The Lott can be loaded down to sedate 45/70 trapdoor levels, and all the way up to dinosaur-busting 6000+ ft/lbs energy.

I chose the 458 because I really wanted to shoot a Ruger #1 with a heavy barrel, at a reasonable cost (components etc.) that could be loaded up or down (how I shoot it most of the time) and would handle cast bullets well.  Truth be told, if I could have acquired one of the Lyman centennial 45-70 models with the "tropical" weight barrel at a reasonable cost (I think I paid under $500 for mine shipped) I would have jumped on it.  So I guess you could say the 458 was a compromise for me but it has worked out really well.  It shoots great with IMR 4759 and cast bullets, I love the way it looks, and as soon as I get time, I intend to mount a little Nikon 2x7 on it to round it out.

.45-90.  Because it will do everything the .45-70 will do a bit better, except shoot smokeless.  When I shoot smokeless, I use the .45-70.  Lot of fun with either.

I guess I'm a confirmed 45-70 lover for over 35 years currently own:

Browning 1885.......45/70
Browning 1886.......45/70
Thompson Contender - 16" pistol in .......45/70
Thompson Encore - Katahdin 18" in ......45/70

But I won't give up my Winchester Model 70 in 458Mag.  It's my security blanket.

Until you get your hands on one you won't have a clue to what you've been missing in American manufacture. It will cost more than a CZ 550. For good reason.

More rifle than one will EVER need, PERIOD.
I have to disagree with the previous poster when comparing the "Safari" Win 70 to the CZ550 Safari Magnum.
I happen to own one of each; The CZ is in 458 Lott and the Win is in 375 H&H.
While the Winchester is moderately nicer in finish, what you get over the CZ is VASTLY overpriced in my opinion. The Winchester offers one virtually ZERO in added utility. If you are purchasing a "working" safari arm to be used, go with the CZ, If you are purchasing for a "show off" piece that you are afraid to take into the field for fear of beating up the finish, and have the extra $$$ for the "warm fuzzy" of buying a US made product, go with the Win.

Don't take me wrong, I REALLY like my Winchester Safari, however the cost/benefit analysis steers me to the CZ.
