I think I found my elk load for the Huntsman!
« on: July 04, 2005, 07:56:27 AM »
This is a FIVE shot group, the one on the lower left was the fouling shot. It measures just a hair over 1-1/2" for 5 shots, the first three were right at 1" with no swabing between shots. This has been the typical results I get out of these 460gr No Excuses Conicals. These are sized at .503 and are basically a slip fit with very light engraving while loading. I have also discovered that the OLD .503 430gr White Super Slugs shoot very well out of my Huntsman but ran out of daylight for further testing. Will be doing a little more testing as weather and work permit.

Wow, that's some good shooting. Now if, you have problems hitting the animal you can't blame it on the Huntsman.... :-D

Why?

That's a nice group!  Did you mention the distance?  No matter, get within a 100 yards and it's time to start boning out!

My only suggestion is that when you do your final sight in, wipe your bore to the point of pristine before each load so as to be arriving at a clean bore point of impact.

Good luck!

Stew,

Those were shot without wads at 100 yds, scoped. I have been shooting some gasket wads lately with the peep sight and groups have been in the 2-3 inch range off the bench. The wads definitely don't hurt but it shoots pretty good either way. I will be using the wad for hunting, just for a little extra insurance in keeping the powder dry.

Longcruise,

Gotcha covered on the clean bore, will be that way from here on out. The Huntsman definitely isn't fussy, it will shoot clean or dirty.  That might be why it will be #1 this year with my White being my #2 back-up. They both shoot conicals very well, and the Huntsman shoots everything well.

Three more weeks and I will be in the Rockies! :D

Yeah!!!   On the 9th I'll be going up to set camp and hunt Sat morn.  Gotta run back to town for a sat eve wedding and then it's back to camp for the hunt!  Still haven't settled on my load yet since I'm shooting a different barrel this year.  Probably gonna be 80 or 90 ff and a .530 ball.

We're leaving on the 6th, should be out there on the 7th. That will give us flatlanders a couple days to get used to the altitude.

Good luck to ya!

Busta,

Thanks for the info.

Busta, Longcruise

Good luck to you both :D .  In the early 1980's I was stationed at Peterson Air Force Base and hunted near Steamboat springs.  What beautiful country it is.

Yes, I'm familiar with that page.  It belongs to a local bowhunter.  And, it is indeed the way to go.  Boning out is the only method I use any more and I don't bother to carry the head out unless I want the antlers or want a CWD test or if the head is necessary for evidence of sex.

Busta, pay heed:  If you are hunting in a unit that has a 4 point or better requiremnt on bulls, you will need to bring the head out even with the evidence of sex attached to a major portion of the boned out meat!

It's easy to forget to leave evidence of sex attached to the rear hindquarter meat when you are skinning.  Don't forget.  The mammary or male sex organs detached from the meat and displayed separately will not suffice when your boned out meat is being checked

You can bone out however keeping the above in mind.  Failure to provide satisfactory evidence of sex to the wildlife officer is one of the most common mistakes cited in CO.  And, you will be cited.  They aren't so much hard nosed about it as they are consistent in applying the law so as to prevent the spread of the stories that go:  "well, the officer decided we meant no harm and let us off".  Those stories only encourage abuse and so they have a policy of writing the citation no matter how nice a guy/girl the officer is or how nice a guy you are.

Also, some processors won't accept the meat for processing if the proper evidence of sex is not attached at the time you bring it in.

That said, I'm a 59 year old fat guy and I can single handedly bring a large elk out in two trips without wasting any meat.  The head makes for a third trip though.  A boned out elk will provide about 160 to 180 pounds of meat so your looking at 80 to 90 pounds per trip.

Make sure you have a pack frame that will handle the load.  Get a large capacity pack with a frame and put your meat in game bags with a large plastic bag lining the pack.  Once the meat is in camp, get it out of the plastic, as it can cause spoilage.

Heck, as long as I'm rambling here, I'll throw out a few other things.  Carry everything you might need to handle your downed animal in your day pack.  Includes;  Flashlight (sure, it was light when you went in, but by the time you were done field dressing the elk it was dark  ), lotsa rope, two tent stakes (use with rope to lift the legs on one side of the animal up high while you gut.  there's not always a tree handy), a sharp gutting/skinning knife, a boning knife (a fish fillet knife is good), a stone to sharpen up occasionaly, a pen to sign your carcass tag with, a piece of string to tie the tag to the animal, your game bags, several plastic bags, an 8X10 plastic tarp if you don't mind carrying it, a bone saw (I carry a regular collapsible hack saw with a 18 tpi blade), Something to pull the "whistlers" or ivories with (can be done with a knife and bone saw), all the other stuff that common sense says you shoult carry with you!

I don't hunt with the pack frame on me cause I generally field dress the animal and bone it out if there is time and then come back later to take the meat out.  If there is no time to bone it that day you need to make sure to get the skin peeled back of the carcass around the front shoulders and neck as well as the hindquarters to dissipate the animals body heat.

If you are going to hunt waaaaaay in with many miles back to camp, then you should have the pack frame with you as well as the minimun stuff needed to spend the night at the kill site.  That will save you a round trip walk to get the pack frame.  Hopefully once you get the first load out you will have help available to go back with you.

You probably knew all this stuff already, but maybe there are others reading this thread who might benefit.

Well said,  I might add a couple packets of hand wipes like the pretty waitress at the dinner gives you after eating barbecue ribs, a plastic bottle of water and a camera.

Did some more shooting with the peep sight. Injured my right eye two weeks ago (piece of steel stuck in my cornea) and couldn't see squat until a couple days ago. I think the old eyeball is workin' just fine again, what do you think?  Leave for Colorado on Tuesday the 6th and the hunt starts Saturday the 10th. Choices, choices, what load should I use?

Busta where abouts are you going in Colorado on your hunt.i hunted on the Grand Mesa a few years back.i have one point towards a elk permit now and the area we are hunting next year is about one hour south west of Denver.a bow hunter can hunt that area every other year with the preferance points the way they are.

im heading out to North Dakato on Sept 7th on a mule deer hunt.will be very close to the Montana border in the top part of that state.

hows the recoil when using those big leads?to bad a sabot and bullet cant be used there in Colorado :?

good luck on your hunt,
jeff

Jeff,

I am hunting on the Grand Mesa, we hunted out there in '02 also.

The Huntsman handles recoil very well, very nice rifle for the money. I have three Whites, two Knights, one T/C and the NEF is going to be #1 with a White going along as back-up.

Good luck on your mule deer hunt.

thats a real nice place there on the Grand Mesa.when we were there we stayed at the Powder Horn ski resort, some tent i must say.we killed three mule deer and one cow elk.we got all of these in the last two days of our hunt.you should of seen the bath tub filled with all the boneless meat.we went into Grand Juntion for a piece of plywood for a cutting board and we cut up all the meat right in the condo.we planned on using a local meat processing plant to do up our animals but we killed them to late in the hunt so we did our own.i hear the powder horn has really gotten big with the addition of a couple new condos.

are you hunting with the outfitter Warren Bruin?

good luck on your hunt and  have fun tring to breath out there as the air is real thin up there.

Jeff,

We are hunting public ground, no outfitter. We are also staying at PH, stayed there in '02 also and you right it is some tent. :)  What I call roughing it.  We will be there on Wednesday and that will give us a couple days to catch our breath.

good luck huntingout there.maybe sometime we can get together and talk.we dont live that far apart.

i killed a mule deer just over the bank from the Powder Horn when i was there.i could see the condo from a tree stand i placed there.also shot a cow elk from that same stand.we were bow hunting  hunting on our own without an outfitter.are you going up to the top of the Mesa?we hunted up there some but the animals were down on the slopes.the bulls should be talking some now and maybe you can call a nice one in.we hunted on the archery opener and did alot of walking.we walked the quakies alot.lots of elk right near the PH when we were there.you will also want to check out the sand slide.if you see it you will know what im talking about.the elk like to cross that for some reason.a friend of mine shot a small bull  there with a muzz loader a few years back on a differant hunt

check out lands end if you havnt all ready too.thats quit a view from there.

Busta,

If you get in a situation where you need some help packing an animal out etc give me a call at 970-464-7268    I live in Palisade and it is only a half hour drive to Powderhorn.  I've got a packframe and can always use exercise.

Good Luck,

BeanMan

Wow BeanMan, that is a very generous offer. Be carefull what you wish for, you just might get it. :) I think we will be able to handle it though.

Are you hunting during the Muzzleloader Season? You are one lucky feller, to live right in the area. In '02 the weather was dry and everything was low, is it dry again this year or is it green up top? I know before you said you went up top to feed the skeeters, so you must have gotten some rains for them to be up there. I haven't been keeping track of the weather out there this year like I should have been.

Thanks, and good luck to you.

Busta,

This year has been pretty good moisture wise.  Winter was very wet and so was June.  July and August were hot and dry but there was a lot more grass and other plants than you had last time.    The Wife and I just came back from Monument Creek (about 20 miles east of Powderhorn)  where we spent the weekend at a  friends archery camp.  They have been seeing animals and killed one nice 6X6 mid week.  They said there was very little bugling going on which does not surprise me.  The rut should get going about the last couple of days of blackpowder season.

Work the public/private boundary over by lift 2 westend.

been reading all the posts and what I find out is that the new ML's aren't much different than the old ones.
Now the differences in the powder and projectiles is greater.
