I am thinking of loading some of the 270 grain soft points for use on deer and black bear this season. I was wondering if anyone had any experience using these bullets on game? Any info would be appreciated.Thanks

I haven't shot any game with that bullet, but I have shot some at the range. They were very accurate at 25 yds. I have no doubt that they would work great on deer or black bear. Hope this helps. :grin:

I have used the 270gr. GDSP on a doe last year. 35 yard shot from a 7.5" barreled super blackhawk. One clean hole going straight through. She went about 20 yards. I will use them again this year.

Although this is not my caliber and I have not shot anything with this bullet. I do load it for a friend, he absolutely loves this bullet!
I load it with a near max load of H110 powder. He shoots them in his marlin rifle and it knocks deer flat!
I highly recomend it.

I use the 270 gold dots in a 444 Marlin rifle. Have never recovered a bullet, although I have only used them on whitetails. They appear to work well for the 444 marlin. I'm pushing them at about 2150 fps. I don't think I would use them for a 44 mag handgun bullet and expect much expansion in whitetail. Bear might be a differant story though.

You probably won't get much expansion at 44 mag velocity, but it is like shooting a heavy hardcast bullet. It is a big bullet that will drive clean through whatever you shoot. Two holes are better than one when it comes to blood trailing.

My thoughts on the subject is that the 270 gr GD is a fine bullet. I am going to use it on hogs. I preferr the 240 gr HP for deer. It would be good on black bear also.

I want some expansion for deer and the 270 is more in the penetration category. :wink:

I have used the 270 gr GDSP for the last few years as my primary deer hunting round. I honestly cant say whether or not they expanded because I have never recovered a bullet...all pass thru's with large exit wounds. I reload using 20.8 grains of 296 with a Rem 2.5 primer for about 1350fps.

All one shot kills and most dropped on the spot or darn near to it. I've probably taken 8 deer with them so far, from a dressed 220 pound buck to small does.

I have tried just about everything for deer in my .44. I have found that the Sierra's, GDSP's, XTP's and commercial loads like the Federal Castcore have been all very good. The 270 GDSP's just shoot real well out of my 629DX though so I am sticking with them.

I tried them in the Lone Eagle pistol that I had until I recently got rid of it for something smaller that I could put in a holster. Loaded with 17gr. of 2400 powder, I shot at a tree that was about 6" diameter. Range was about 130yds. I went through the tree, and I dug the bullet out of a dirtbank about 10yds. behind that. It was about 6 inches in the dirt mushroomed fairly well. It's definitely a tough bullet.

I never shot the Speer Glod Dot bullets, but would guess that their 240 gn. bullets would be a better choice for deer. I have a box of their 240 gn. bullets and like the looks of them, but haveing shot about everything else on the market over the years, I`ve been useding a .44 mag since abt. 1980, I`ve settled on the 240 gn. Serrias. I seem to get the best combonation of accuracy and terminal preformance with that bullet in abt. every gun it`s been used in and since I load for afew friends that`s a fair number. I have recovered 1 of them over the years and it was from a nice 8 point buck that was shot at 135 yrds. in the right hind quater and the bullet was just under the skin of the forunt right shoulder. It had expanded nicely at that range. Gun was a 7 1/2 in. barreled SBH. If you hunt bear I would save the 270`s for bear and get some 240 gn. bullets for deer.

I decided to take the plunge and load up some 270 grain GD's. I loaded them up with 21.5 grains of LilGun powder. It should be a good deer load.

Hopefully I will let everyone know in mid November.
