HP Silhouette Rifle....
« on: October 23, 2005, 07:11:00 AM »
I'm building a High Power Sil. Rifle and was wondering what the thought was on using a fluted barrel to help make weight restrictions.  What are the plus and minuses to using a fluted barrel other than to make weight? I don't see many HP Sil Rifles with fluted barrels.

Thanks,
Minuteman

From what I've seen in the last couple of years fluted barrels have become popular in standard and hunting rifle.

Fluting allows you to get a stiffer barrel for the same weight. A number #5 contour fluted will weigh about the same as a #4 non. Theoretically the increases surface area will also improve cooling.

As far as NRA rules go, as long as it's taperer and 26" or less, doesn't put the rifle over weight, pretty much anything goes. Don't know if they have passed the scrutiny of the world organization.

I have just got a new Kovacs designed rifle built by Keith Hills in Canberra Australia. 7MM BR  Trued Rem700, Pseco 3 lever trigger, 24" S/S True Flight (NZ) Barrel it is Flutted and bead blaster for glare, in a HS precision thumbhole silhouette stock, with Weaver high see through mounts and Premier boosted 6.5 to 20 leupold EFR. I had to router and take a bit of the alloy block out of the front of the stock and put alloy bolt schrod and titanium firing pin and Tubb Spring in to make weight. I have only used it in competition at our nationals a few weeks ago and I loved it. Every Ram was shoved off the stand, WHOOP and over they went  using 175 Grain Ram Kings made by World Silhouette Champion, Anthony Finn and his 145 Grain Hammered the chickens , pigs and turkeys
It shoots like a Bench rest rifle and I plan to use it in 500m Bench rest, Fly shoots off the bags as well.  Talk to Dan theodore he really know his stuff,  his advise helped me a lot, the popple on this site are most helpful and their Knowledge is like a library  just ask and they  help. A BIG THANKS to all of you . regards Phill
